Planning a trip to Zion National Park in August can feel a little tricky.
Will it be too hot to hike? How crowded does the shuttle get? Can you still do The Narrows—or do summer storms make it risky? And is Angels Landing even worth it this time of year?

I’ve visited Zion in late summer and learned that August is all about timing and flexibility. I’ve learned the best ways to beat the crowds and what’s actually realistic in the heat — and what just sounds good until you’re out there.
This guide is for you if you’re planning an August trip, want to hike the iconic trails, or are trying to avoid the biggest crowds and mistakes. You’ll learn what the weather is really like, how the shuttle system works, what’s realistically doable, and how to plan your days.

Visiting Zion National Park in August
August in Zion National Park is peak summer — hot, busy, and dramatic.
The park is fully open, iconic hikes like Angels Landing and The Narrows are in full swing, and long daylight hours give you plenty of time to explore. But this is also the heart of monsoon season, bringing intense heat, afternoon thunderstorms, and flash flood risk.
If you plan around early mornings, late afternoons, and changing weather, August can be an unforgettable time to experience Zion’s towering canyon walls and desert landscapes.
Weather in Zion in August
August is very hot, with added weather drama from monsoon season. Expect hot mornings, stormy afternoons, and cooler evenings.
Daytime highs are typically in the 90s to over 100°F. Nighttime lows are usually in the 60s to 70s°F. I prefer to get a very early start to the day, rest in the middle of the day, then do another hike late afternoon.
The monsoon season means frequent afternoon thunderstorms are possible, so keep an eye on the weather. Narrow slot canyons (including The Narrows) can become dangerous during flash floods, so always check weather forecasts and avoid hiking in narrow canyons during storms.
Heat and sun exposure are the biggest challenges — hydration is critical!
What’s Open in August at Zion National Park
August is the peak summer season, so all park services, roads, and activities are typically open. Here’s what you can expect.
Zion Canyon Shuttle System
The Zion Canyon shuttle is fully in operation in August – and required.
Private vehicles are not allowed on Zion Canyon Scenic Drive during shuttle season, so you have to use the shuttle (or an e-bike).
There are two shuttle routes: the Park shuttle operates inside Zion Canyon, running run frequently from the Visitor Center to Temple of Sinawava. The Town shuttle runs along the main road in nearby Springdale. They connect at the Visitor Center just inside the park’s main south entrance.
The shuttles run early morning to evening (typically around 6:00 AM – 8:00 PM in July).
Expect long lines, especially mid-morning and early afternoon. I recommend starting early or visit later in the day to avoid peak crowds.
The parking lot at the Visitor Center is often full by 8:00am in August. If you get there when the parking lot is full, you’ll need to park at one of the private lots in Springdale and take the Town Shuttle to the Visitor Center and the start of the Park Shuttle.
I’ve found around 7:00am to 7:30am is a sweet spot – I’ve gotten there then in August and found a parking spot and had no lines for the shuttle. Your experience may be different, but that’s been mine.
Scenic Roads
Zion–Mount Carmel Highway (including the famous tunnel) is open in July.

Kolob Canyons Scenic Drive is technically open all year, but always check the NPS website for current conditions.
Kolob Terrace Road is open in August.
Visitor Centers
The visitor centers are fully operational in August, including:
Zion Canyon Visitor Center – about 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Kolob Canyons Visitor Center – open with midday closure for lunch
The Zion Human History Museum is also open in August.
You can get maps, permits, park information, shuttle info and trail closure updates. Ranger programs run regularly. Water stations are available — use them often.
Accommodations
Zion Lodge is open year-round and fully operational in August. This is the only hotel located inside the park.
It includes lodging rooms and cabins, a restaurant and café, and a gift shop. It’s a great place to cool down during the day. Having an ice cream in the shade of the giant cottonwood tree that covers most of the lawn in front of the lodge is one of my favorite summer activities in Zion!
Rooms book well in advance.
The main gateway town – just outside the main South Entrance to the park – is Springdale and there are plenty of places to stay there.

Campgrounds
Campgrounds are open in August.
Watchman Campground is open year-round. It’s inside the canyon and fills up fast during shoulder season. Make reservations up to six months ahead of your visit. Reservations are strongly recommended.
South Campground is closed for a long-term rehabilitation project. It’s typically opens mid-March through October and is near the Visitor Center and shuttle line.
Lava Point Campground is about a 1-hour drive from Zion Canyon on the Kolob Terrace Road. It’s typically open from June through October, depending on weather.
Hiking Highlights in August
Hiking is still a highlight — but timing and safety are critical. Early mornings and late afternoons are much more comfortable (and safer) than hiking in the middle of the day!
Angels Landing
One of Zion’s most iconic hikes, this steep, dramatic trail requires a permit year-round. Daily and seasonal lotteries fill quickly, so planning ahead is essential. This is a strenuous trail, so it is best attempted early in the morning. The permit system has 2 time slots:
(a) starting the hike before 9:00am
(b) starting the hike after 9:00am
Although the trail is fully accessible, it can be extremely hot and exposed. So, before 9:00am is much more comfortable. If you choose the ‘after 9:00am’ time slot, then I recommend starting right at 9:00am or waiting until later afternoon. I’ve done it at 9:00am in August and it was pleasant enough starting out, but was getting uncomfortable on the way down. Refrigerator Canyon is a welcome relief.

The Narrows
This epic river hike starts at Temple of Sinawava and follows the Virgin River through towering slot canyon walls.
This is one of the best ways to beat the heat. Spending a few days in cool water on a hot summer day, and with the tall canyon walls protecting you from the sun, this is a great summer hike!
Water levels are usually lower than spring, making conditions more favorable — but the flash flood risk is higher in August due to storms. Always check conditions with the NPS before entering.
No special permit is needed for the classic bottom-up Narrows hike (unless you plan to go through-hike (tow-down) from Chamberlain’s Ranch, which does require a permit).

Other Great August Hikes
Emerald Pools Trails — waterfalls and pools are still fairly full from the snow melt, though getting less spectacular than earlier in spring. (This is one of my favorite hikes at any time of the year, though.)
Observation Point — stunning overlook high above the canyon.

Canyon Overlook Trail — excellent sunrise/sunset views with fewer crowds. I love this as for sunrise – have a good quality headlamp ands start hiking in the dark. Then watch the canyon walls glow bright orange in the first light of the day. This is really, really cool (literally and metaphorically)!
Watchman Trail & Pa’rus Trail — great lower-elevation walks but they are very exposed with no shade, so these are better late in the afternoon.

Is August a Good Time to Visit Zion?
It’s not the best, but you can make it work if you plan carefully. The park is fully open, iconic hikes like Angels Landing and The Narrows are in full swing, and long daylight hours give you plenty of time to explore.
But this is also the heart of monsoon season, bringing intense heat, afternoon thunderstorms, and flash flood risk. And it’s crowded.
Focus on early mornings, stay flexible with afternoon storms, and prioritize safety in slot canyons. And plan around the crowds and shuttle lines.
