Visiting Arches National Park in August

Weather in Arches National Park in August
August is very hot in Arches. Average daytime highs are typically in the 90s to over 100ยฐF, but extreme highs can reach 116ยฐF. Nighttime lows are usually in the 60s to low 70sยฐF.
Don’t underestimate the heat: Heat and sun exposure are the biggest challenges and midday temperatures on exposed rock surfaces can feel much hotter than the official air temperature. Heat-related illness is a real risk in August and hydration is essential.
Monsoon season brings afternoon thunderstorms. They are usually brief but intense.
Whatโs Open in Arches National Park in August?
August is peak summer season in Arches National Park, and virtually everything is fully open. The main challenge isnโt closures โ itโs the heat and the crowds.
Hereโs what you can expect:
Scenic Drive
The 18-mile park road is fully open and all scenic pullouts and viewpoints accessible. However, the park gets very crowded, especially when timed entry reservations are not in place. The NPS often closes the entrance when the park fills up and waiting is not permitted on the main road.

Many of the parking lots fill up and it can be tricky getting a parking spot at popular destinations in the park.
Arrive early or visit later in the day to avoid crowds and heat.
Hiking Trails
Hiking is popular in August and all the major trails are open in August. But timing is everything. I strongly recommend starting hikes at sunrise or shortly after and avoiding strenuous hikes during midday heat.

The other thing (in addition to the heat) to be aware of is that August is part of the Southwest monsoon season. This means that afternoon storms can develop quickly. Lightning, heavy rain, and strong winds are possible and flash flooding can occur in low-lying areas. So, avoid hiking in narrow washes or slot canyons during storms.
Visitor Center
The Visitor Center is open daily. There are flush toilets, water bottle filling stations available, park maps, permits, and information.
Accommodations
Devils Garden Campground (the only accommodation in the park) is open. Reservations are typically required months in advance. Note that there is no shade at many sites.
Most visitors stay in Moab, Utah, which has a wide range of hotels, rentals, and services.

August is busy, so booking ahead is important.
Ranger Programs
Ranger-led programs are often available in summer, including sunset and evening talks at the amphitheater in Devils Garden Campground.
Timed Entry Reservations
Timed entry reservations were required to enter the park during peak daytime hours but these are NOT in effect in 2026.
Check my Guide to National Parks reservations to check if this has changed.
Is August a Good Time to Visit Arches National Park?
Not really – though it can be if you plan carefully around the heat. Focus on early mornings, evening hikes, and photography opportunities, and stay weather-aware during monsoon season. With the right approach, youโll experience incredible desert scenery and some of the parkโs most dramatic lighting conditions.
Pros
- Long days for exploration
- Clear nights for stargazing
- Great for photography
- Full access to all roads and trails
Cons
