Olympic National Park in July: What to Expect

July in Olympic National Park is peak summer โ€” and one of the absolute best times to visit.

Trails are fully open, alpine areas become accessible, wildflowers begin blooming at higher elevations, and the typically rainy Pacific Northwest experiences some of its driest, sunniest weather of the year.

From rugged coastline to lush rainforests to mountain vistas, July offers the rare chance to experience all three ecosystems in one trip โ€” though crowds increase significantly, especially in popular areas like Hurricane Ridge and the Hoh Rain Forest.

Letโ€™s take a closer look at what visiting Olympic National Park in July is really like.

The Hoh Rain Forest Road is open and easily accessible.

The Sol Duc Road is also open, providing access to hot springs and waterfalls.

Beaches

Olympic National Park offers a unique opportunity to witness a natural phenomenon called “bioluminescence” along the park’s coastal beaches. Hot Springs

One of the top reasons to visit in July is the chance to experience Sol Duc Valley and its famous Sol Duc Hot Springs. Nestled in natural surroundings, the mineral hot spring pools provide a relaxing and rejuvenating experience. The valley also features the picturesque Sol Duc Falls, accessible via a scenic hike through the old-growth forest.

Hiking

July is the start of peak hiking season in Olympic and July offers the widest variety of hiking options of any month.

High-elevation trails are finally snow-free or mostly clear by mid-July, so this is when you can access true alpine scenery.

Fully accessible areas include Hurricane Ridge hikes (Hurricane Hill, Ridge trails), the rainforest trails (Hall of Mosses, Hoh River Trail) and coastal hikes (Rialto Beach, Second Beach, Ruby Beach).

Wildflowers and Wildlife

You can experience rainforest, mountains, and coastline in one day โ€” something unique to Olympic.

July brings wildflower season to higher elevations as the alpine meadows around Hurricane Ridge begin to bloom.

Coastal areas feature dramatic sea stacks, tidepools, and ocean views.

Wildlife is active across the park and summer conditions make wildlife viewing easier and more predictable.

Elk are commonly seen in valleys and meadows. Birdlife is abundant throughout the park. And marine life (including tidepool creatures and occasional whale sightings) can be spotted along the coast.

Campgrounds and Lodging

Campgrounds

Campgrounds are open in July. These include low-elevation campgrounds (Hoh, Kalaloch, Sol Duc) and higher-elevation campgrounds like Deer Park (until mid-October).

Lodging

Lodges like Kalaloch Lodge, Lake Crescent Lodge, Sol Duc Hot Springs Resort and Lake Quinault Lodge operate seasonally and are open in July.

Reservations are strongly recommended โ€” July is one of the busiest months.
