Visiting Olympic National Park in August
With everything open and the best weather of the year, August has a lot to offer.
What’s the weather in Olympic National Park in August?
August brings warm, stable summer weather. In fact, August is one of the driest months of the year. A lot of the park is rainforest, but most of the rain is in the winter.
Coastal areas can still feel cool and breezy, while inland valleys are warmer.
Daytime highs are typically in the 60s to mid-70s°F (and even warmer inland). Nighttime lows are often in the 50s°F.
What’s Open in Olympic in August?
All services and accommodations are usually open and operational in July and this is the best time of year for full park access across all regions of the park.
Roads & Park Access
All major park roads are open in August.
The Hurricane Ridge Road is fully accessible, offering stunning mountain views.
The Hoh Rain Forest Road is open and easily accessible.
The Sol Duc Road is also open, providing access to hot springs and waterfalls.
The Staircase Area is also typically open by early summer.
Beaches
Olympic National Park has incredible beaches – but they do disappear under water at high tide, so be sure to time your visits to them around the low tide.

Hot Springs
One of the top reasons to visit in July is the chance to experience Sol Duc Valley and its famous Sol Duc Hot Springs. Nestled in natural surroundings, the mineral hot spring pools provide a relaxing and rejuvenating experience. The valley also features the picturesque Sol Duc Falls, accessible via a scenic hike through the old-growth forest.
Hiking
August is peak hiking season, with everything from rainforest walks to alpine hikes and coastal adventures.. Trails are generally dry, in excellent condition and alpine routes are typically snow-free.

Visitor Centers
All visitor centers and services are fully operational. Ranger programs are frequent and include guided hikes, talks, and educational programs.
Wildflowers and Wildlife
August is one of the best months for wildflowers at higher elevations and the alpine meadows near Hurricane Ridge are in bloom. I really recommend heading there on a clear, sunny day if you can.
Rainforests remain lush and green year-round.
Coastal scenery features dramatic sea stacks, tidepools, and ocean views.
Wildlife is active across the park and summer conditions make wildlife viewing easier and more predictable.
Elk are commonly seen in valleys and meadows. Birdlife is abundant throughout the park. And marine life (including tidepool creatures and occasional whale sightings) can be spotted along the coast.
Campgrounds and Lodging
Campgrounds
Campgrounds are open in August. These include low-elevation campgrounds (Hoh, Kalaloch, Sol Duc) and higher-elevation campgrounds like Deer Park (until mid-October).
Lodging
Lodges like Kalaloch Lodge, Lake Crescent Lodge, Sol Duc Hot Springs Resort and Lake Quinault Lodge operate seasonally and are open in August.
Reservations are strongly recommended — August is one of the busiest months.

Is August a good time to visit Olympic National Park?
Yes. August in Olympic National Park is peak summer — and one of the best times to experience the park in full. Trails are fully open, alpine areas are snow-free, wildflowers bloom in higher elevations, and the typically rainy Pacific Northwest enjoys some of its driest, sunniest weather of the year.
The trade-off? Crowds are at their highest, especially in popular areas like Hurricane Ridge, the Hoh Rain Forest, and coastal beaches.
Additionally, the risk of wildfires during the dry summer months may be a concern, and visitors should stay informed about fire conditions and restrictions. Lastly, mosquitoes and black flies can still be present in August, so packing insect repellent and taking necessary precautions is recommended.
