What’s the Weather in Yellowstone in August?

August brings warm, stable summer weather.

Daytime highs are typically in the 70s to low 80sยฐF.

Nighttime lows often drop into the 40sยฐF, sometimes cooler at higher elevations.

Afternoon thunderstorms are common but usually brief.

Even in summer, mornings and evenings can feel cool โ€” layers are still useful.

All lodging and campgrounds are fully open and in high demand in August.

All Yellowstone National Park lodges are open in August.

โœ” Old Faithful Snow Lodge is open in August (usually open late April – late October for the summer season).
โœ” Old Faithful Inn is open in August (usually open from the beginning of May – mid-October).
โœ” Old Faithful Lodge Cabins is open in August (usually open from early May – early October).
โœ” Lake Yellowstone Hotel & Cabins is open in August (open mid-May to mid-October).

โœ” Madison Campground is open (the beginning of May – mid-October).
โœ” Tower Fall Campground is open ( late May – late-September).
โœ” Grant Village Campground is open (the end of June – late-September).
โœ” Slough Creek Campground is open (mid-June – mid-October).
โœ” Indian Creek Campground is open (mid-June – mid-September).
โŒ Pebble Creek Campground is currently closed year round

What Services are open in Yellowstone in August?

August is full summer season, so:

Visitor Centers

Visitor centers are fully staffed and open.

Ranger programs run frequently, including guided walks, wildlife talks, and evening campfire programs. This is one of the best months for educational experiences in the park.

โ„น๏ธ The Albright Visitor Center in Mammoth Hot Springs is open year-round and is staffed and available for information, exhibits, maps, and trip planning. It has regular hours (8:00 AMโ€“6:00 PM) in August.
โ„น๏ธ Canyon Visitor Education Center has regular summer hours in August (8:00 AMโ€“6:00 PM).
โ„น๏ธ Old Faithful Visitor Center has regular summer hours in August(8:00 AMโ€“8:00 PM).

Wildlife & Nature in Yellowstone in August

Wildlife is still active, though behavior changes from spring.

Bison, elk, and deer are commonly seen.

Bears are active and feeding heavily before fall.

Wolves and coyotes are best seen in early morning or evening.

Birdlife is abundant.

Early morning and sunset are the best times for wildlife viewing.

Remember wildlife rules (stay at least 25 yards away from large mammals and 100 yards from bears and wolves).


Things to Do in Yellowstone in August

August continues to offer beautiful summer scenery. Wildflowers linger in many areas, especially at higher elevations. Meadows are green and lush. Rivers and waterfalls still flow strongly, though less intense than spring.

The combination of blue skies, geothermal steam, and open landscapes makes August incredibly photogenic.

August is prime hiking season in Yellowstone. Trails are generally snow-free and dry. A wide range of hikes are accessible, from short walks to long backcountry routes.


Roads & Park Access in Yellowstone in August

All major roads in Yellowstone are usually open in August, though some areas may be temporarily closed for road works. This includes high-elevation routes like Dunraven Pass (between Tower and Canyon).

The entire Grand Loop Road โ€” the main road that connects the parkโ€™s famous sights โ€” is typically fully accessible, including:

๐Ÿš— Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone
๐Ÿš— Tower-Roosevelt area
๐Ÿš— Yellowstone Lake

However, traffic congestion can be significant during peak hours. Expect delays, especially near wildlife sightings and popular attractions.

August is one of the best months to visit Yellowstone National Park if you want the full summer experience, with long sunny days, full access to every corner of the park, and vibrant landscapes at their best. Wildflowers still color the meadows, wildlife remains active, and geothermal features put on their usual spectacular show.

August is one of the best months to visit for overall experience, but itโ€™s also one of the busiest, with heavy traffic, full parking lots, and high demand for lodging and campsites, so plan ahead, start early, and be prepared for crowds to make the most of your trip.
