Grand Canyon National Park in August: What to Expect

Planning a trip to Grand Canyon National Park in August can feel a little daunting. Is it dangerously hot? Can you actually hike below the rim this time of year? What about crowds—and those sudden summer storms?

If you’re trying to figure out whether August is a good idea (and how to do it safely), you’re in the right place. I’ll walk you through exactly what to expect so you can plan it right.

I’ve spent time at the Grand Canyon in late summer and learned quickly that August is all about understanding extremes. The rim can feel surprisingly pleasant… while the inner canyon can be brutally hot. I’ve done early morning hikes, timed viewpoints for the best light, and adjusted plans around afternoon thunderstorms.

This guide is for you if you’re planning an August trip, traveling with family, or trying to experience the canyon without putting yourself at risk in the heat.

Visiting the Grand Canyon in July

A Grand Canyon August visit combines hot temperatures, monsoon rains, and a wide range of things to do. 

Weather in the Grand Canyon in August

In general, expect hot mornings, stormy afternoons, and cooler evenings. But, temperatures vary a lot depending on where you are.

🌡️ South Rim average temperatures range from 80–90°F daytime highs (but some days get into the 100s!) with cooler mornings and evenings.
🌡️ Inner canyon has average highs 100–110°F. This is an average – days can often be even hotter! and the rocks radiate additional heat. Because of these extreme conditions, hiking to the canyon floor during midday is strongly discouraged.
🌡️ North Rim is cooler (and less crowded), with daily average highs usually in the 70s°F.

This is the peak of monsoon season. Storms often develop in the afternoon and lightning is a real hazard, especially on exposed trails and rim viewpoints. Flash floods can occur in side canyons. So, always check weather forecasts before hiking, especially for below-the-rim routes.

What’s Open in Grand Canyon National Park in August?

Despite the heat, August is peak season at Grand Canyon National Park, and both the South Rim and North Rim are fully open and operating on summer schedules.

Here’s what you can expect:

South Rim

August is one of the busiest months on the South Rim, and all major facilities and services are open.

This includes Desert View Drive and the Desert View Watchtower, Hermit Road (which is only accessible by shuttle in summer), the Grand Canyon Village area, and the Yavapai Point & Geology Museum.

Although road access is not an issue, traffic and parking can be.

Fortunately, the shuttle system is fully operational (and IMO essential) in August. This includes the village shuttle, the shuttle to and from Tusayan, the Kaibab/rim route shuttle, and the Hermit Road Shuttle (which is required — private vehicles are restricted in August). Shuttles run frequently but can be crowded midday. Using the shuttle is often easier than trying to park at busy viewpoints.

All Visitor Centers (Grand Canyon Visitor Center, Yavapai Geology Museum, and Verkamp’s Visitor Center) are open and operating on a full summer schedule. Ranger programs include educational talks, guided walks, and evening programs.

North Rim

The North Rim is open mid‑May through mid‑October, including all of August. Note that a large fire destroyed Grand Canyon Lodge at the North Rim in 2025. The scenic drive and North Kaibab Trail are open.

The North Rim is cooler, higher elevation, and significantly less crowded than the South Rim.

Inner Canyon

Phantom Ranch, which has cabins and hiker dorms, is open. Advance reservations are required – you need to enter a lottery 15 months in advance. See my Guide to Phantom Ranch Reservations for more details.

Backcountry camping is allowed with permit.

Water stations typically operational (check current status before hiking).

Keep in mind, though, that there is extreme heat in August — conditions often exceed 110°F at the bottom. Rangers strongly recommend avoiding strenuous hikes below the rim during midday (10:00am – 4:00pm).

Places to Stay

All lodging & campgrounds are open in August, but it gets busy – reservations are strongly recommended months in advance.

The main gateway town to the South Rim is Tusayan.

On the North Rim, the only lodge inside the national park, the Grand Canyon Lodge, burned to the ground in a terrible fire in 2025. The nearest lodge is Kaibab Lodge.

There is a campground on the North Rim. Check recreation.gov for availability and to book.

Things To Do in August in Grand Canyon National Park

Vegetation is greener than earlier in summer due to monsoon rains. Wildlife such as mule deer, elk, and condors are active.

The best times to explore and photograph the canyon are sunrise and sunset. The morning light is often clear and calm, and in the afternoon, storm clouds and changing light add drama to canyon views.

August is also a good month for a whitewater rafting excursion along the Colorado River, when you’ll enjoy the cold water.

In August, the National Park Service provides ranger-led programs comprising various activities, such as guided hikes, wildlife spotting sessions, and informative talks on the canyon’s geology and cultural history. 

Hiking Trails

All trails are usually open, including the Bright Angel Trail and the South Kaibab Trail but it gets dangerously hot below the rim. So, although partial day hikes below the rim are possible, heat caution is really important.

I’ve seen people really suffering from the heat not far below the rim – always take plenty of water and salty snacks. Hike early or late. Remember – going down is optional – going up is not!

Is August a Good Time to Visit Grand Canyon National Park?

Not really, IMO. Everything is open, but it’s crowded, really hot, and there are monsoon rains. To avoid the crowds, consider exploring the lesser-known North Rim or opting for off-peak hours for your hikes. 

If this is the only time you can go, you can still have a great time if you plan around the heat and weather. Stick to early mornings, enjoy sunset views, use the shuttle system, and be cautious of monsoon storms. With the right approach, you’ll experience the canyon at its most dramatic — with towering clouds, changing light, and unforgettable views.
