Yellowstone National Park in May: What to Expect

May in Yellowstone feels like spring ‘turns toward summer’. Temperatures warm, wildlife activity spikes, and scenic drives begin to open up across the park, though the season still transitions from winter’s conditions well into the month.

Roads and trailheads that were inaccessible just weeks before gradually unlock for wheeled vehicles, lower-elevation trails become snow-free, and waterfalls roar with snowmelt runoff under warming skies.

With fewer crowds than summer yet dramatically more access than April, May is a rewarding time to experience Yellowstone’s geysers, wildlife, meadows, and emerging greenery — if you come prepared for variable conditions and check current road and trail status before you go.

What’s the Weather in Yellowstone in May?

Yellowstone in May is unpredictably springlike. It can be sunny and mild one day, and cool and snowy the next.

Highs and lows: Average temperatures often range from the 40s to the 60s°F, but chilly mornings and nights near freezing are common, especially early in the month.

Weather shifts: Spring storms, rain showers, or even flurries are still possible, especially at higher elevations, so layering and waterproof gear are essential.

Snowmelt: Melting snow swells rivers and waterfalls, creating dramatic cascades and lush riparian areas.

‼️ Tip: Don’t be surprised to see snow, mud, sunshine, rain, and thunder all in the same day in May — nature transitions slowly at Yellowstone’s 7,000-plus-foot elevations.

What Accommodations are Open in Yellowstone in May?

Like many things in Yellowstone, May is a major transition month.

Lodging

Many Yellowstone National Park lodges are open by or in May, including Old Faithful area lodges and others along the Grand Loop, giving visitors more accommodation options than in April.

Campgrounds start to open up in May.

✔ Mammoth Campground is open year round.
✔ Bridge Bay Campground opens mid-May
✔ Canyon Campground opens at the end of May
✔ Fishing Bridge RV Park opens early May
✔ Madison Campgrounds opens at the beginning of May
✔ Tower Fall Campground opens late May
❌ Grant Village Campground is closed in May
❌ Slough Creek campground is closed in May
❌ Indian Creek Campground is closed in May
❌ Pebble Creek Campground is currently closed year round

What Services are open in Yellowstone in May?

May is when things really start to open up in Yellowstone. but not everything opens at the same time, so an early May visit can look very different from a late May visit.

Visitor Centers

ℹ️ The Albright Visitor Center in Mammoth Hot Springs is open year-round and is staffed and available for information, exhibits, maps, and trip planning. It has spring hours (9:00 AM–6:00 PM) until mid-May and then regular hours (8:00 AM–6:00 PM).
ℹ️ Canyon Visitor Education Center is open 9:00 AM–4:30 PM until mid-May and then 8:00 AM–4:30 PM until late May and then regular summer hours from late May (8:00 AM–6:00 PM).
ℹ️ Old Faithful Visitor Center has spring hours (9:00 AM–5:00 PM) until late May and then regular hours (8:00 AM–8:00 PM).
ℹ️ Fishing Bridge Visitor Center and Trailside Museum open near the end of May (8:00 AM–6:00 PM).
ℹ️ Grant Visitor Center opens near the end of May (8:00 AM–6:00 PM).
ℹ️ Madison Information Station and Trailside Museum is closed in May (it usually opens at the start of June).
ℹ️ Museum of the National Park Ranger is closed in May (it usually opens at the end of June).
ℹ️ Norris Geyser Basin Museum and Information Station opens near the mid-May (9:00 AM–5:00).
ℹ️ West Thumb Information Station opens near the end of May (9:00 AM–5:00 PM).
ℹ️ West Yellowstone/Lobby NPS Desk (in West Yellowstone town) has spring hours (8:00 AM–5:00 PM) until late May and then regular hours (8:00 AM–8:00 PM).

Stores

Most stores in Yellowstone open up throughout the month of May.

🛍️ Mammoth General Store is open daily year-round.
🛍️ Old Faithful General Store is open daily late April to mid-October.
🛍️ Old Faithful Basin Store is open daily late May to mid-September.
🛍️ Canyon General Store is open daily early May to mid-October.
🛍️ Canyon Adventure Store is closed in May. It’s opens mid-June to late September.
🛍️ Tower General Store is open daily late May to early October.
🛍️ Fishing Bridge General Store is open daily mid-May to mid-October.
🛍️ Bridge Bay General Store is open daily late-May to mid-September.
🛍️ Grant Village General Store is open daily from the end of May to late-September.
🛍️ Lake General Store is closed in May. It’s opens early June to mid-September.

Wildlife & Nature

May is great for wildlife viewing. The park’s famously wild inhabitants are extremely active and this is one of the main reasons for a May visit to Yellowstone.

Calving season

Bison calves are being born, elk are birthing, and moose cows may defend newborns. This is great for viewing from a safe distance.

Birdlife return

Waterfowl and migratory birds arrive and nest in wetland areas.

Bear activity

Bears are fully emerged from hibernation and on the move. Keep food stored and maintain safe distances.

Wildlife is one of Yellowstone’s top reasons to visit in May — but remember wildlife rules (stay at least 25 yards away from large mammals and 100 yards from bears and wolves).

Things to Do in Yellowstone in May

In addition to wildlife viewing, Yellowstone’s legendary thermal features are accessible and often dramatic in May:

✔ Old Faithful & Upper Geyser Basin: Many boardwalk trails around geysers are clear as snow recedes.

✔ Grand Prismatic & Midway Geyser Basin: Trails to overlooks may be open later in May as snow melts at lower elevations.

Fun fact: Riverside Geyser, Great Fountain Geyser, and other hydrothermal features continue to erupt reliably throughout May, often with fewer crowds.

✔ Waterfalls: The snowmelt makes Yellowstone’s waterfalls especially dramatic in May. Read my Guide to The Best Waterfalls in Yellowstone.

✔ Back-country Hikes: Full backcountry hikes may still have snow on them. Peak season starts mid-May (access begins late April). Online reservations must be made at least three days before the trip start date.

⛔ Most ranger programs typically start Memorial Day, right at the end of May (or beginning of June).

Park Access, Roads & Entrances

Yellowstone is technically open year-round, but most roads close in winter to regular traffic.

Things start to open up in April, but it isn’t until May that all roads open up. The roads reopen in stages.

The North Entrance corridor over the North–Northeast road his open year-round and remains the most reliable early-season access. The West Entrance from West Yellowstone is also usually open by the start of May.

Entrance-by-Entrance Openings

By mid-May, most major park roads are open to regular vehicle traffic, with higher pass roads like Dunraven Pass opening later in the month as weather permits.

The Beartooth Highway, which provides access to the park from the northeast, usually opens late May, but this can be delayed by late winter weather.

Flexibility is essential.
Road opening dates are weather-dependent. Late snowstorms can delay openings; early melt can move them up.

By late May, you should be able to fully access the park, but that may not be the case every year.

Is May a Good Time to Visit Yellowstone?

Let’s take a look at the pros and cons:

Bottom Line

I like Yellowstone in late May. Early May is good for wildlife, but many services and roads aren’t open yet. By late May, most things are open and you can fully experience the park. (This is also when you can start using my itineraries).
