Grand Canyon National Park in May: What To Expect

The very first time I visited the Grand Canyon was in May. And May in Grand Canyon National Park is still one of my favorite months to visit . The spring season is in full swing, temperatures are pleasant for hiking and sightseeing, and long daylight hours let you make the most of your time on and around the rim.

At the South Rim, highs typically reach the 60s and low 70s ยฐF while nights remain cool, and itโ€™s rare to see much rain in May as the dry season begins to take hold, creating ideal conditions for exploring viewpoints, trails, and canyon overlooks without the intense summer heat.

Wildflowers bloom along the rim and inner canyon, crowds are growing but not yet at peak summer levels, and major park services, lodging, and campgrounds are all operating โ€” making May a full-access transitional month that combines comfortable weather, expanding trail access, and vibrant spring scenery that appeals to first-time visitors and repeat travelers alike.

Let’s take a look at exactly what to expect in Grand Canyon National Park in May.

May marks the beginning of peak season, leading to more visitors and potential crowding at popular trails and viewpoints. To avoid congestion, consider visiting the less-travelled North Rim or exploring early in the morning or late afternoon.

May is ideal for many hiking trails.

Rim hikes and overlooks (Mather Point, Yavapai Point) are easily walkable in cooler spring conditions.

Inner canyon trails like South Kaibab Trail and Bright Angel Trail are popular, and May is a great month to hike the canyon because cooler weather on the rim makes longer days outdoors more comfortable. But temperatures at lower elevations can be significantly hotter than the rim, so start early and carry plenty of water.
