Arches National Park in June: What To Expect

June in Arches National Park is the start of true desert summer.

The parkโ€™s iconic red rock arches glow under long, sunny days, all roads and trails are fully accessible, and sunrise and sunset photography is spectacular โ€” but temperatures rise quickly, and midday heat can make hiking challenging.

If you plan your days around early mornings and evenings, June can be a fantastic time to visit, with fewer crowds than peak July and August but full access to everything the park offers.

Hereโ€™s what you can realistically expect when visiting Arches in June.

Visiting Arches National Park in June

View of rock formations and bushes under the blue skies in Arches National Park.

June marks the beginning of summer in Arches National Park. The park’s flora and fauna bask in the balmy weather, presenting an exquisite blend of colors and textures. The warm weather in Arches National Park in June attracts nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.

Weather in Arches National Park in June

June boasts the longest days of the year, allowing plenty of time to explore the park’s wonders. Expect plenty of sunshine, with an average of 11 hours of daylight. The extended daylight hours provide a great opportunity to venture further into the park and embark on longer hikes to iconic sites, such as Double Arch and Balanced Rock.

Be prepared for temperature fluctuations, especially in the early morning and late evening. Average daytime temperatures range from 85ยฐF to 95ยฐF (and can get even higher) and nighttime temperatures can drop to around 50ยฐF to 60ยฐF.

June typically has sunny days and clear skies, providing ideal conditions for capturing stunning photographs of the park’s landmarks that showcase the interplay of light and shadow on the magnificent sandstone formations.

June is typically dry, with low humidity levels. Rainfall is minimal, averaging less than 0.5 inches for the month.

Things to Do in Arches National Park in June

June is a good month to see wildlife and chances are good for spotting creatures such as desert cottontail rabbits, mule deer, and various lizards and birds.

Around the 20th of June, you can witness the Summer Solstice at Delicate Arch, when the sun perfectly aligns with the arch, illuminating it in a warm, golden glow – a sight that simply cannot be missed.

Hiking is one of my favorite things to do in Arches National Park. However, as temperatures rise during June, it’s essential to take precautions to avoid heat-related issues. Be sure to carry plenty of water, wear sun protection, and seek shade whenever possible. Consider starting your hikes early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the hottest parts of the day. These times of day also offer the best light for photography. You could also explore shaded canyons and alcoves.

Crowds in Arches National Park in June

June is peak tourist season, so you may encounter larger crowds at popular attractions and trailheads. Plan to visit during off-peak hours, and consider exploring less frequented trails.

June’s popularity means the only campground in the park – Devils Garden – fills up quickly. Reservations are highly recommended, and you should consider alternative campgrounds outside the park if needed.

The rangers at Arches National Park occasionally collaborate with their counterparts at Canyonlands National Park and Dead Horse Point State Park to offer nighttime stargazing tours worth experiencing.

Whatโ€™s Open in Arches National Park in June

June offers full access to Arches National Park, with all major roads, trails, and facilities typically open for the summer season.

Hereโ€™s what you can expect:

Scenic Drive

The 18-mile Arches Scenic Drive (main park road) provides access to all major viewpoints and trailheads. The road is fully open in June and all major viewpoints and pullouts are accessible.

However, with no reservations required, traffic can be heavy late morning through afternoon. The NPS closes the entrance when the park is full. Parking at popular spots (like Delicate Arch and Devils Garden) can fill quickly, especially mid-morning.

Hiking Trails

All major trails are open in June, including:

Delicate Arch โ€“ iconic but exposed; best at sunrise or sunset
Devils Garden โ€“ multiple arches and longer hikes
Landscape Arch โ€“ relatively easy and great for early morning
The Windows Section (including Double Arch) – shorter, easier walks
Sand Dune Arch – short easy trail gets very crowded
Balanced Rock – short easy trail but the parking lot can often be full

Trail conditions are generally dry and stable, though extremely hot by midday. Trails are exposed with little shade, so bring plenty of water. I strongly recommend avoiding strenuous hikes during midday heat. Start early (before 9:00AM) or hike in the evening if you can.

Visitor Center

Open daily.

Water bottle filling stations available.

Park maps, information, and bookstore access.

Accommodations

Devils Garden Campground is the only place to stay inside Arches National Park. It’s open in June but books far in advance. There are no first-come, first-served options โ€” reservations are essential.

Most visitors stay in Moab, Utah, which has a wide range of hotels, rentals, and services.
