Visiting Acadia National Park in July

What’s the weather in Acadia National Park in July?
July is one of the warmest and most pleasant months of the year. Average daytime highs are 70โ80ยฐF and nighttime lows are around 55โ60ยฐF.
There is often a cool ocean breeze and itโs a great time for water activities like sailing and kayaking. Itโs ideal weather for hiking, biking, and exploring the shoreline.
However, it’s also not uncommon for thick fog to cover the island and obscure the views โ especially in the morning, when the famed sunrise can be a total no show. ย And there are occasional summer showers.
How crowded is Acadia National Park in July?
July gets very busy. The main tourist season starts the July 4 holiday. The Park Loop Road and the parking lots in the national park can be crowded and congested. Even with the reservation system for Cadillac Mountain, the parking areas at the summit can be crowded.
It’s important to have a plan! If youโre visiting at this time, I recommend getting one of my detailed itineraries.
Whatโs Open in Acadia National Park in July?
July is peak season in Acadia National Park, and virtually everything is fully open and operating on summer schedules.
The Roads
The Park Loop Road is fully open to vehicles and all scenic pullouts and overlooks are accessible. However, traffic can be heavy late morning through afternoon, so you should arrive early for easier parking at popular stops.
Cadillac Mountain Road is also open to vehicles. However, vehicle reservations are required in July.
There are two separate time slots – for sunrise and for daytime access. Reservations are needed for both. The sunrise time slots especially sell out quickly.
โก๏ธ See my Guide to the Cadillac Mountain Reservation System for full details.
No reservation are required if you hike or bike up to the summit.
Shuttle
There are 11 routes on the free Island Explorer shuttle in peak season. The peak summer schedule operates throughout July.
Hiking Trails
All major trails are open, including the famous iron-rung trails, such as the Beehive and the Precipice Trail, but can be crowded.
โก๏ธ Read my guide to the Best Hikes in Acadia National Park for inspiration.
Carriage Roads
Summer is one of the best times to explore the Carriage Roads.
They are also fully open for biking, walking, and horseback riding. You can rent a bicycle in Bar Harbor and put it on the front of a shuttle bus to get to the carriage roads. These are very cool – but hilly!
No motor vehicles allowed are allowed on the carriage roads at any time of the year.
Visitor Centers
Hulls Cove Visitor Center, which is the main visitor center, is open daily. Schedules vary, but July has a lot of ranger programs, including guided hikes, evening talks, junior Ranger programs, and special educational programs.
Beaches
There are two main beaches in the park. The only ocean beach, Sand Beach, is open and lifeguards are often on duty in July. I personally find the water too cold for swimming, even in July, but I have seen plenty of people who obviously feel differently.
Much more comfortable – very comfortable but not as pretty – is Echo Lake Beach, which is also open. The beach is man made, but the lake is pretty and the water lovely!
Bar Harbor & Surrounding Areas
Restaurants, shops, and cafes are fully open, and lodging is fully operating (but you should book far in advance). There are plenty of things to do, including whale watching tours, boat cruises and kayak rentals, and sail boat trips. You can book a sailing trip on the Windjammer here.
Lodging & Campgrounds at Acadia in July
Camping
There are four campgrounds inside the park.
Blackwoods Campground and Seawall Campground on Mount Desert Island; Schoodic Woods Campground on the Schoodic Peninsula; and Duck Harbor Campground on tiny Isle au Haut.
All are open and often fully booked โ reservations are essential. You can make reservations on recreation.gov.
There also plenty of private campgrounds on an near Mount Desert Island.
โก๏ธ See my guide to Acadia Camping for more information.
Lodging
Nearby Bar Harbor offers a wide range of hotels, inns, and vacation rentals. August is peak season, so book well in advance. Check my guides:
