Arches National Park in July: What to Expect

Planning a trip to Arches National Park in July can feel a little intimidating. Will it be unbearably hot? Will you need a timed entry reservation? Can you actually hike to places like Delicate Arch in the middle of summerโ€ฆ or is that a bad idea?

If youโ€™re trying to figure all that out, Iโ€™ve got you โ€” Iโ€™ll show you exactly what to expect and how to plan around the challenges.

Iโ€™ve visited Arches in peak season and learned (sometimes the hard way) what works and what doesnโ€™t.

July here isnโ€™t just โ€œwarmโ€ โ€” itโ€™s intense desert heat, and it changes everything from when you hike to how much water you need. Most people underestimate just how exposed the trails are. Iโ€™ll show you how to avoid the common mistakes and still have an amazing trip.

This guide is for you if youโ€™re planning a summer visit, traveling with family, or trying to see the highlights without overheating or wasting time.

Youโ€™ll learn what the weather is really like, how crowds and timed entry work, whatโ€™s realistically doable, and how to structure your days. Quick tip: the best time to hike to Delicate Arch in July isnโ€™t midday โ€” itโ€™s at sunrise or sunset.

Letโ€™s get you ready for Arches in July.

Visiting Arches National Park in July

View of rock formations surrounded by bushes under the blue skies in Arches National Park.

Weather in Arches National Park in July

July is the hottest month in Arches National Park.

Average daytime highs are 95โ€“105ยฐF (35โ€“40ยฐC), but extreme highs reaching 116 degrees Fahrenheit. Nighttime lows are around 60โ€“70ยฐF (16โ€“21ยฐC).

Don’t underestimate the heat: midday temperatures on exposed rock surfaces can feel much hotter than the official air temperature and heat-related illness is a real risk in July.

Occasional monsoon thunderstorms occur – they are usually brief but intense.

Whatโ€™s Open in Arches National Park in July?

July is peak summer season in Arches National Park, and virtually everything is fully open. The main challenge isnโ€™t closures โ€” itโ€™s the heat and the crowds.

Hereโ€™s what you can expect:

Scenic Drive

The 18-mile park road is fully open and all scenic pullouts and viewpoints accessible. However, the park gets very crowded, especially when timed entry reservations are not in place. The NPS often closes the entrance when the park fills up and waiting is not permitted on the main road.

Many of the parking lots fill up and it can be tricky getting a parking spot at popular destinations in the park.

Hiking Trails

All major trails are open in July, including:

Delicate Arch โ€“ iconic but exposed; best at sunrise or sunset
Devils Garden โ€“ multiple arches and longer hikes
Landscape Arch โ€“ relatively easy and great for early morning
The Windows Section (including Double Arch) – shorter, easier walks
Sand Dune Arch – short easy trail gets very crowded
Balanced Rock – short easy trail but the parking lot can often be full

โš ๏ธ Note: Trails are fully exposed with little shade. Heat, not closures, is the main concern.

Visitor Center

The Visitor Center is open daily. There are flush toilets, water bottle filling stations available, park maps, permits, and information.

Accommodations

Devils Garden Campground (the only accommodation in the park) is open. Reservations are typically required months in advance. Note that there is no shade at many sites.

Most visitors stay in Moab, Utah, which has a wide range of hotels, rentals, and services.

July is busy, so booking ahead is important.

Ranger Programs

Ranger-led programs are often available in summer, including sunset and evening talks at the amphitheater in Devils Garden Campground.

Timed Entry Reservations

Timed entry reservations were required to enter the park during peak daytime hours but these are NOT in effect in 2026.

Check my Guide to National Parks reservations to check if this has changed.
