May in Acadia National Park is a true shoulder season โ and thatโs exactly why it appeals to the right kind of traveler.
Spring is arriving, but slowly. The ocean is still cold. And while the park is reopening, it hasnโt fully shifted into summer mode yet.
If youโre planning a trip to Acadia National Park in May, youโre probably trying to understand what that means on a day-to-day level.
Will the Park Loop Road be open? Are hiking trails accessible? Is it worth visiting before summer services and schedules are fully in place?
These are smart questions, because May in Acadia can look very different depending on what youโre hoping to experience.
Some parts of the park โ like the carriage roads and many lower-elevation hiking trails โ are usually in good shape by May and are especially enjoyable without summer crowds. Other experiences, including ocean swimming, full ranger programming, and the lively Bar Harbor atmosphere, may still feel quiet or limited.
Iโll share what I enjoy most about visiting Acadia in May, what requires flexibility, and what I typically recommend saving for June, July, or August.
This guide is best for travelers who donโt mind cooler temperatures, occasional rain or fog, and a slower pace. If you enjoy quiet trails, uncrowded viewpoints, and the feeling of having the park mostly to yourself, May can be an excellent time to visit โ as long as you plan with realistic expectations.
May isnโt the best month for warm weather or fully operational amenities, but it is one of the best months for peaceful hiking, scenic drives without traffic, and spotting wildlife as the park transitions into spring.

Visiting Acadia National Park in May

What is Acadia National Park like in May? Is Acadia nice in May?
May is not my favorite month to visit Acadia, though things are getting better by the end of the month. Be prepared for mud and bugs.
Weather in Acadia National Park in May
May is cloudy most of the time. The rain, combined with the snowmelt, turns the trails to mud in the first half of the month especially, which isn’t very pleasant.
However, by mid-May the park starts to dry out and youโll begin to be able to experience most of what Acadia has to offer. The trails are less muddy and the temperatures can be perfect for hiking.
Although the weather is warming up a little, itโs still too cold for water activities. The trees still arenโt green, which is less pretty, but does offer less obstructed views from some of the viewpoints.
The downside of later May is that biting bugs descend on the park from mid-May to mid-June when all that running water causes the perfect conditions for them to thrive. Take bug spray.
What’s open in Acadia in May?
May is when the park starts opening up for the season.
The Roads
The Park Loop Road, Schoodic Loop & Point Road and all paved roads are all open in May (they open mid-April).
This includes Cadillac Mountain Summit Road. Reservations are required for the summit road starting in late May. See my Guide to the Cadillac Mountain Reservation System for exact dates and more details. This makes early-mid May a convenient time to go there.
Unpaved roads open mid-May.
The carriage roads, which are typically closed in April to protect them when they’re really muddy, also open up sometime in May.
The Shuttle
The free Island Explorer shuttle starts late May on a limited spring schedule (3 routes).
The Beaches
Echo Lake Beach is open (it opens mid-April) and Sand Beach is open (it’s open year round). It’s too cold to swim, but nice for beach walks.
Lakewood Beach is still closed in May (it opens at the start of June)
Campgrounds
The campgrounds inside the park open up throughout May.
Blackwood opens the start of May. The others (Seawall, Schoodic Woods and Isle au Haut) open late May.
Services
May is still pretty quiet, except for the Memorial Day weekend. By Memorial Day, most of the island is open for business.
Other things that open up in May include:
โ
The Hulls Cove Visitor Center opens early May
โ
Rockefeller Welcome Center opens early May
โ
Carroll Homestead opens early May
โ
Jordan Pond House restaurant opens in May
โ
Carriage Ride Tours starts late May
Is May a good time to visit Acadia National Park?
Not really – though it gets better by the end of the month.
Pros
- Cadillac Mountain Reservations don’t start until late May.
- Services open up throughout the month
- all roads are open by the end of the month
- It’s not too crowded (except Memorial Day weekend)
Cons
- Trails are still muddy for the first half of the month.
- It can be very buggy in the 2nd half of the month.
- Not all services are open by the start of the month.
- It’s still too cold for most water-based activities.

In fact, the thing that most people ask me about is how to put it all together into an itinerary that makes sense. They decide when theyโll go and maybe even book their flights, but still worry about how to minimize the crowds, what to do โ and when โ and how to coordinate it all.
