Visiting Acadia National Park in August

What’s the weather in Acadia National Park in August?

The weather is lovely. August brings warm, comfortable coastal weather. Ocean breezes help keep temperatures moderate compared to inland areas.

July is one of the warmest and most pleasant months of the year. Average daytime highs are in the 70s to low 80s°F and nighttime lows are usually in the 50s to low 60s°F.

However, occasional showers and morning fog are possible.

How crowded is Acadia National Park in August?

August is one of the busiest months in Acadia. This means that the Park Loop Road and the parking lots in particular can be crowded and congested. Parking fills early and can be hard to find later in the day. Fortunately, there’s a free shuttle system (more on that below).

Even with the reservation system for Cadillac Mountain, the parking areas at the summit can be crowded.

It’s important to have a plan! If you’re visiting at this time, I recommend getting one of my detailed itineraries.

What’s Open in Acadia National Park in August?

August is one of the best months for full access in Acadia. Nearly all facilities, roads, trails, and services operate at their peak during this time. Here’s exactly what you can expect to be open:

The Roads

The Cadillac Mountain Summit Road is open in August, but vehicle reservations are required. There are two separate time slots for sunrise and daytime. These reservations are necessary from late May through late October.

No reservation are required if you hike or bike up to the summit.

The entire 27‑mile Park Loop Road is open and easily driven, providing access to Sand Beach, Thunder Hole, Otter Cliffs, Jordan Pond, and Cadillac Mountain Road (reservation required).

Island Explorer Shuttle System

The free Island Explorer shuttle system is fully operational at the start of August, helping ease parking congestion throughout Mount Desert Island and the park’s busiest areas.

Peak summer is when shuttle routes run most frequently. There are multiple routes around Mount Desert Island, to the mainland and even a route on the Schoodic Peninsula that connects with the ferry from Bar Harbor.

The fall schedule typically starts mid-August.

Hiking Trails

Every major trail — including Beehive, Precipice, Jordan Pond, Gorham Mountain, and Cadillac Mountain trails — is fully accessible in August. Weather is warm and mostly dry, making it prime hiking season.

Trails are generally dry and fully accessible in August. Some exposed hikes can feel warm in midday sun, so I recommend starting early for popular hikes to avoid crowds and heat.

Carriage Roads

All 45 miles of carriage roads are open for biking, walking, and horseback riding. You can also take a carriage ride on a carriage road.

This is one of the most popular ways to explore the park, but a word of warning – it’s hilly!

Beaches & Coastal Areas

Popular spots like Sand Beach, Echo Lake Beach and Ocean Path are open. Swimming is popular during August’s warmest days bur water temperatures at Sand Beach are still chilly (50s–60s°F) – too cold for me! I prefer Echo Lake, which is warmer.

Kayaking, boat tours, and coastal walks are widely available.

Ranger Programs & Visitor Centers

Visitor centers — including Hulls Cove Visitor Center and the Sieur de Monts Nature Center — are open and fully staffed.

August is peak season for ranger-led talks, guided walks, night sky programs and Junior Ranger activities.

All Bar Harbor Services

Because August is one of the most popular months, nearby Bar Harbor is in full swing with restaurants, shops, tour boats, kayak rentals and lodging & reservations (but you should book far in advance). There are plenty of things to do, including whale watching tours, boat cruises and kayak rentals, and sail boat trips. You can book a sailing trip on the Windjammer here.

Lodging & Campgrounds at Acadia in August

Camping

There are four campgrounds inside the park.

Blackwoods Campground and Seawall Campground on Mount Desert Island; Schoodic Woods Campground on the Schoodic Peninsula; and Duck Harbor Campground on tiny Isle au Haut.

All are open and often fully booked — reservations are essential. You can make reservations on recreation.gov.

There also plenty of private campgrounds on an near Mount Desert Island.

August is one of the best months to visit Acadia National Park if you want the full summer experience. With great weather, open trails, and lively coastal scenery, it’s an ideal time to explore.

But peak season also brings challenges. August is the busiest month – even busier than July – so you will not be alone. Expect crowded parking lots, lines for the free Island Explorer shuttle, congested roads, busy viewpoints and booked out accommodations.

So, plan ahead, start early, and be prepared for crowds to make the most of your trip.
