Acadia National Park in April: What to Expect

April in Acadia National Park is a bit of a question mark โ€” and thatโ€™s usually why people start researching it.

You might be wondering:
Is it too early in the season?
Will anything be open?
Is it worth going before summer really kicks in?

Visiting Acadia National Park in April means stepping into the park as itโ€™s waking up from winter. The crowds are thin. The air is crisp. The ocean feels dramatic. But services are limited, some roads and trails may still be closed, and the weather doesnโ€™t always make up its mind.

This guide is best for travelers who enjoy peaceful trails, moody coastal views, and donโ€™t mind trading convenience for solitude. If youโ€™re flexible, okay with cooler temperatures, and curious about seeing Acadia without the crowds, April can be a great fit. However โ€ฆ

Hereโ€™s a quick preview: April is NOT my favorite month to visit the park!

Below, Iโ€™ll walk through whatโ€™s typically open, what the weather is really like, and how to plan a visit that works with Aprilโ€™s realities โ€” not against them.

Visiting Acadia National Park in April

What is Acadia National Park like in April?

April is typically wet and muddy. The weather in April is not great โ€“ the snow and ice are melting, and rain and fog are common, especially in the mornings. Temperatures are typically between the mid-20s and the mid-50s (F).ย

If you want to see and do the best of Acadia National Park, April is not the best month โ€“ especially the first half of the month when most park facilities are still closed.

The carriage roads are often closed at this time so they donโ€™t get ruined as they turn to mud.ย

However, some things start to open in mid-April, which is when the Park Loop Road, Cadillac Mountain Road and Echo Lake Beach open.ย

On the plus side: Reservations arenโ€™t required for the Cadillac Mountain Summit Road until late May, so once itโ€™s open, you can drive up easily.ย  (Though keep in mind that mornings in April are often foggy, so you might not see the famous sunrise).

And the park is definitely not crowded this time of year.ย  There are no leaves on the trees, which I donโ€™t like much, but some people like the fact that this gives more expansive views from many places in the park.ย ย

Key Events in April:ย ย
