Planning a trip to Glacier National Park usually starts with the same question: How many days do you actually need?
With jaw-dropping scenery around every bend, long drives between regions, and hikes that make you want to keep going โjust a little farther,โ Glacier is a park where time disappears fast.
Like most parks, the right number of days depends on how deep you want to explore and what you like to do.
Iโll break down what you can realistically see and do in 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or more days, so you can plan a Glacier itinerary that feels epic, not exhausting.

How many days in Glacier National Park do you need?
The short answer: It depends. There a lot to do in Glacier National Park – from scenic drives to epic hikes, boat rides, horseback riding and more.
Plus, there are several distinct sections – and there’s a large mountain range in the middle of the park, making logistics more complicated.
I recommend at least 4-5 days if you like hiking and want to see the different areas of the park. But that may be different for you.
Let’s take a look at different options to see what you can realistically see and do.
One Day in Glacier National Park

With one day at Glacier National Park, you’ll want to spend the day driving the Going to The Sun Road. This is one of the most scenic drives in the USA. It crosses from the west side of the park (West Glacier/ Apgar) to the east side (St Mary). The highest part of the road is Logan Pass.
A one day Glacier National Park itinerary can include the highlights along the road. You can visit Lake McDonald where you’ll have time to take a short cruise on Lake McDonald. You can also visit nearby McDonald Falls and Birdwoman Falls Overlook.
Stop off at all the pullouts alongside the road to enjoy the views from the overlooks.
If you like to hike a little, you can hike to Hidden Falls Overlook and even a short part of the iconic Highline Trail, both starting at Logan Pass.
On the east side, you can squeeze in a hike to the beautiful St Mary Falls and Baring Falls.
Some things to be aware of:
Because this is a high alpine road, most of it is only open for a few months a year. It’s open year-round near the West Entrance, but the entire road does not usually open until late June at the earliest and then the alpine sections of Going-to-the-Sun Road typically close for the winter around the third Monday of October (but this can happen earlier due to wintery weather.)ย
There are also vehicles restrictions: If your vehicle is longer than 21 feet or wider than 8 feet, you won’t be able to drive the road between Avalanche Creek and Rising Sun. If your vehicles is more than 10 feet in height, you may have difficulty driving west from Logan Pass to the Loop due to rock overhangs.ย
There are no gas stations inside the park.
Parking is limited. During summer, parking lots often fill by early morning.
There are no entry reservations in 2026. This means that the Going to the Sun Road gets very congested at times. When this happens, the NPS temporarily close sections of the road.

2 Days in Glacier National Park

With an extra day in Glacier National Park, I’d still stay in the Going to the Sun Road section of the park – but slow down the pace a little and add in more activities.
On a 2 days in Glacier National Park itinerary, you’ll have time to hike to Avalanche Lake if you like hiking. The views of the lake are stunning.
You can also extend the hike to St Mary Falls to Virginia Falls – it’s not that much further and you get two waterfalls for the price of one.
You can also add in extra activities like swimming in Lake McDonald, horseback riding or various watercraft.
You could extend the hike from Hidden Falls Overlook down to Hidden Lake itself. It’s a beautiful, but steep hike. If you do this, you’ll need to take a shuttle because of the 3-hour parking restriction at Logan Pass. Reservations are required.

3 Days in Glacier National Park

With 3 days at Glacier National Park, you’ll be able to visit the Many Glacier / Swiftcurrent area of the park. This is in the northeast part of the park and has a separate entrance (not from the Going to the Sun Road).
Your 3 days Glacier National Park can be active or more relaxed. You can take a boat trip on Swiftcurrent
Lake & Lake Josephine (there’s a short 0.2-mile hike between them).
There are two amazing hikes in this area: to Grinnell Lake and to Grinnell Glacier. You can choose either one or both.
An alternative for your third day, if you really like to hike, is to spend the day hiking the whole Highline Trail. It’s long – it’s 11.6 miles from Logan Pass to The Loop. But the views are truly breathtaking. To do this, you’ll need to take a shuttle (reservations are required).

4 Days in Glacier National Park

On a 4-day itinerary in Glacier National Park, you could do everything on the 3-day itinerary, but do booth options – Many Glacier and the highline Trail.
Or, you could choose one of these and add in the Two Medicine area. This is the southeast part of the park and has its own separate entrance. The highlight is Two Medicine Lake. You can take a cruise on the lake and/ or rent a kayak or canoe.
There are several hikes in the area, including Twin Falls, Aster Park Falls and Appistoki Falls.

5 Days in Glacier National Park

With five days in Glacier National Park, you can spend 2 days on the Going to the Sun Road, plus Many Glacier and Two Medicine. Then on the fifth day, either hike the Highline Trail or head to the less-visited northwest corner of the park.
The highlight here is Bowman Lake. The road is unpaved, so it’s best to have a 4WD in this area. Stop at Polebridge Mercantile & Bakery for one of their legendary baked goods.
You could also take a half-day (or all day and skip Bowman Lake) rafting trip on a river just outside the national park.

With 7 days in Glacier National Park, you can do it all! Spend 2 days on the Going to the Sun Road, go to Many Glacier, Two Medicine and the northeast corner of the park. Hike the Highland Trail. Take a whitewater rafting trip. Go horseback riding. Take at least a couple of lake cruises.
There plenty of amazing hikes in the park and and tons of non-hiking activities to do.
