Visiting Bryce Canyon National Park in October

Red rock mountains covered with snow and below are pine trees in Bryce Canyon National Park in October

October offers a quieter experience than the busy summer season while still providing access to most of the park’s major attractions. Comfortable daytime weather makes hiking much more enjoyable, and the lower visitation levels mean shorter waits for parking, shuttle stops, and popular viewpoints.

The park’s high elevationโ€”between 8,000 and 9,000 feetโ€”means autumn arrives early. Aspen trees display brilliant shades of gold, mornings often begin with frost, and occasional snow showers may dust the colorful hoodoos later in the month.

For many visitors, October strikes the perfect balance between pleasant weather, beautiful scenery, and manageable crowds.

Weather in Bryce Canyon National Park in October

Because of the park’s elevation, October temperatures are considerably cooler than many other Utah national parks.

Typical conditions include:

  • Daytime highs: 50โ€“65ยฐF (10โ€“18ยฐC)
  • Nighttime lows: 20โ€“35ยฐF (-7 to 2ยฐC)

Sunny afternoons remain comfortable for hiking, but mornings and evenings can feel quite cold. Freezing temperatures overnight are common, and light snowfall is possible at any point during the month, especially later in October.

The air is dry and the sun remains strong at high elevation, so sunscreen is still recommended even on cooler days.

Things to Do in October

October is an excellent month to explore the park on foot. Cooler temperatures make longer hikes much more enjoyable than during the warmer months.

Popular hikes include:

  • Navajo Loop Trail
  • Queen’s Garden Trail
  • Peekaboo Loop Trail
  • Fairyland Loop Trail
  • Rim Trail

The lower temperatures also make horseback riding, scenic drives, and ranger-led programs especially enjoyable.

Scenic overlooks provide exceptional visibility thanks to crisp autumn air, and sunrise and sunset often produce spectacular colors across Bryce Canyon’s famous amphitheaters.

Wildlife Activity

Wildlife remains active throughout October as animals prepare for winter.

You may see:

  • Mule deer
  • Pronghorn
  • Uinta chipmunks
  • Golden-mantled ground squirrels
  • Ravens
  • Red-tailed hawks
  • Peregrine falcons

Early morning and late afternoon are generally the best times for wildlife viewing.

As always, observe animals from a safe distance and avoid feeding wildlife.
