10 Tips for Visiting Channel Islands National Park

1. Book Transportation and Campsites Well in Advance
When you’re planning a trip to Channel Islands National Park, booking early is key. The park is only accessible by boat, and spots fill up fast.
Island Packers is the main boat transportation provider, and they often sell out, especially during peak seasons like spring break and summer. Boats don’t run to all of the islands every day, so check the schedule when creating your travel itinerary.
Boats leave from Ventura or Oxnard. I recommend staying overnight near the harbor that your boat leaves from. Check accommodation options on the mainland on Expedia.

Most people only visit as a day trip, but staying overnight gives you more time to relax and enjoy the islands. There are no lodges or hotels on the islands, but there is one main campsite on each of the five islands plus some backcountry options.
If you’re thinking about camping, you’ll need to act even quicker. None of the campgrounds are very big and they’re in high demand. You can reserve campsites up to six months in advance through recreation.gov.
2. Pack All Necessary Supplies, Including Food and Water
Channel Islands National Park is a remote destination, and you need to come prepared. There are no stores or restaurants on the islands, so you have to bring everything you need. This includes all your food and water for the duration of your stay.
If you’re planning a day trip, pack a lunch, snacks, and plenty of water.
For overnight stays, you’ll need to bring enough food for all your meals. Don’t forget to pack a camping stove and fuel if you plan to cook, as campfires are not allowed.
As for water, a good rule of thumb is to bring at least a gallon per person per day. Remember, it’s better to have too much than not enough when you’re on an isolated island.
Pack out all your trash, as there are no garbage facilities on the islands. Also, bring a first aid kit and any medications you might need, as there are no medical facilities on the islands.
3. Wear Sturdy Hiking Shoes for Uneven Terrain
The Channel Islands offer some fantastic hiking opportunities, but the terrain can be challenging. Many trails are rugged and uneven, with loose rocks and steep sections. Wearing appropriate footwear is essential for your safety and comfort.
Go for sturdy hiking boots or shoes with good ankle support and grip. Avoid sandals or flip-flops, even if you’re just planning short walks. The rocky paths and potential for encounters with prickly plants make closed-toe shoes a must.

Break in your hiking shoes before your trip to prevent blisters and ensure a comfortable experience on the islands.
4. Bring Layers for Changing Weather Conditions
The weather on the Channel Islands can be unpredictable and change quickly. Mornings often start cool and foggy before giving way to sunny afternoons. Then, as evening approaches, temperatures can drop again.
To stay comfortable throughout the day, dress in layers. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer, add a warm mid-layer like a fleece, and top it off with a wind and water-resistant outer layer. Don’t forget a hat and sunglasses for sun protection. This way, you can easily adjust your clothing as the temperature fluctuates, ensuring you’re comfortable whether you’re hiking in the midday sun or watching the sunset from a breezy overlook.

5. Plan Activities Around Island-Specific Wildlife Viewing Opportunities
Each island in the park offers unique wildlife viewing opportunities. For example, Santa Cruz Island is known for its island foxes, while Anacapa Island is a haven for seabirds. Research the wildlife specific to the island you’re visiting and plan your activities accordingly.
If you’re interested in marine life, consider snorkeling, scuba diving or kayaking in the kelp forests around Santa Cruz or Anacapa Islands.
For whale watching, plan your visit between December and April when Pacific Gray Whales migrate through the Santa Barbara Channel, or June to September when the large baleen whale species such as Humpback, Blue and Fin Whales feed in the area.
Remember to always observe wildlife from a safe distance and never feed or approach wild animals.
6. Consider Visiting in Fall for Ideal Water Temperatures
While the Channel Islands are beautiful year-round, fall can be an especially great time to visit. The water temperatures are still warm in September and October, making it ideal for water activities like swimming, snorkeling, and kayaking.
In addition to warmer waters, fall often brings clearer skies and calmer seas. This can make for more comfortable boat rides to and from the islands. Plus, you’ll avoid the summer crowds while still enjoying pleasant weather.
Keep in mind that even in fall, water temperatures can be chilly, so consider bringing or renting a wetsuit if you plan to spend a lot of time in the water.
7. Prepare for Limited Cell Phone Coverage
When you visit Channel Islands National Park, you’re truly getting away from it all.
In addition to no stores, restaurants, or lodges on any of the islands, cell phone service is spotty at best. I like to treat this an opportunity to disconnect. Prepare to be off the grid by warning your friends and family in advance.
8. Take Seasickness Medication if Prone to Motion Sickness
The boat ride to the Channel Islands can be rough, especially during winter months when seas are choppier. If you’re prone to motion sickness, it’s a good idea to take precautions. Consider taking seasickness medication before you board the boat.
Over-the-counter options like Dramamine or Bonine can be effective. Take the medication about an hour before your boat departs for the best results.
If you prefer natural remedies, ginger candies or acupressure wristbands might help. During the boat ride, go outside in the fresh air if possible, try to sit in the middle of the boat where there’s less movement, and keep your eyes on the horizon to help maintain your equilibrium.
9. Bring Binoculars for Whale Watching and Birdwatching
The Channel Islands are a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts, and a good pair of binoculars can greatly enhance your experience. You can spot whales from the boat on your way to the islands, especially during the winter migration season. Once on the islands, binoculars are great for observing seabirds, island foxes, and other wildlife from a respectful distance.

Don’t forget to keep them in an easily accessible place so you can quickly grab them when wildlife appears.
10. Reserve Guided Kayak Tours to Explore Sea Caves
One of the most popular activities in Channel Islands National Park is kayaking, especially around the sea caves of Santa Cruz Island. Guided kayak tours are available and highly recommended, especially for beginners or those unfamiliar with sea kayaking.
These tours provide all necessary equipment and give you the chance to safely explore the park’s stunning coastline and sea caves under expert guidance. Guides are knowledgeable about the local marine life and geology, adding an educational component to your adventure.
Book your kayak tour in advance, as they can fill up quickly, especially during peak season.
