Mount Rainier National Park in June: What to Expect

June is when Mount Rainier National Park begins to shift from winter to summer โ€” but the transition isnโ€™t always predictable.

Snow is melting in the valleys.
Roads and trails start reopening.
And the mountain slowly reveals itself after months of winter weather.

If youโ€™re thinking about visiting Mount Rainier National Park in June, youโ€™re probably hoping for good hiking conditions, beautiful scenery, and fewer crowds than the peak summer months.

And June can offer all of that โ€” but it also comes with a few surprises. Snow can linger longer than you expect, especially at higher elevations, and some areas of the park may still be opening for the season.

Some trails may still be snow-covered, but waterfalls are roaring, wildlife becomes more active, and the mountain often looks incredible framed by fresh greenery.

This guide is for visitors who want to experience Mount Rainier before the busiest months of July and August, while still enjoying access to many of the parkโ€™s most beautiful areas.

Below, Iโ€™ll walk through what the weather is really like, which areas are typically open, and how to plan your trip so you get the most out of Mount Rainier in June.

Letโ€™s take a closer look at what visiting Mount Rainier National Park in June is really like.

Visiting Mount Rainier National Park in June

What’s the weather in June in Mount Rainier National Park?

June is summer in most parts of the country, but for most of Mount Rainier National Park, it is still spring. The weather in Mt. Rainier in June is warming up though still cool, ranging from the mid-60s to mid-40s, and the higher elevation areas of the park are still snowy.

June is also heading into the drier season in Mount Rainier National Park.

Whatโ€™s Open in Mount Rainier in June?

Paradise: The road to Paradise is usually open, but many of the trails are still covered in snow, especially early in the month.

Although the Paradise area is open, the trails are typically covered in snow.ย  You can still enjoy great hikes, including the famous Skyline Trail, but youโ€™ll need to wear microspikes or other traction devices.ย

โžก๏ธ If you need to buy some microspikes, read my Guide to the Best Microspikes for Hiking for tips and recommendations.

Longmire: Open year-round and serves as the most reliable base area in spring.

Sunrise Area: The popular Sunrise region opens once road is cleared of snow. This means that is doesnโ€™t usually open until late June or even early July.ย

Stevens Canyon Road: Is usually open in June.

Lower Elevation Hiking Trails: Most lower elevation trails are typically snow-free in June (but always check trail reports for snow conditions). These include:

๐Ÿฅพ Trail of the Shadows
๐Ÿฅพ Grove of the Patriarchs (status can vary year to year)
๐Ÿฅพ Nisqually Vista (may still have snow early June)

Wildflowers in June

Wildflower timing depends on snowmelt, but early June is usually too early for the famous alpine wildflower displays.

Flowers at the lower elevations begin blooming in June. However, the wildflower bloom in Paradise typically peaks inย late July to early August, not June.

Campgrounds & Lodging

In-Park Lodging

There are two lodges inside the park and both are open in June.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ National Park Inn (Longmire): Is open year-round.
๐Ÿ›๏ธ Paradise Inn: Is open in June (It typically opens mid- to late May, depending on snow conditions.)

Campgrounds

๐Ÿ•๏ธ Cougar Rock Campground is open in June (late May to late September).
๐Ÿ•๏ธ Ohanapecosh Campground is open in June (late May to late September).
๐Ÿ•๏ธ White River Campground is open late June to late September.
๐Ÿ•๏ธ Mowich Lake Campground is closed in June. It’s is open early July to early October.

Backcountry camping is limited and requires permits โ€” snow travel skills are essential.

Many visitors stay in gateway towns like Ashford or Packwood for more lodging options.

Is Mount Rainier National Park worth visiting in June?

Is June a good time to visit Mt Rainier? I personally wouldn’t visit in June because I love the Sunrise area and because many of my favorite higher elevation trails are still covered in snow and few wildflowers are blooming yet.

But it’s not all bad. Here are the pros and cons:

Pros

  • Warmer temperaturesย
  • Less rain than earlier in springย
  • Hiking trails at Paradise and Longmireย
  • Additional park facilities open later in June
  • Fewer crowds

Cons

  • Hiking trails can be covered in snow or mushy later in the day
  • Wildflowers not at peak
  • Sunrise area usually still closed
