1. Day Trips from Las Vegas to Grand Canyon National Park

The Grand Canyon is one of the Seven Wonders of the Natural World.  Created by the Colorado River over millions of years, it’s 277 miles long, 18 miles wide at its widest point, and over a mile deep! It’s so close to Vegas that’s a shame to be right here and miss it.

There are three main options for day trips to Grand Canyon from Las Vegas.

West Rim

canyon with river at bottom and balcony hanging over edge at Grand Canyon West Rim

The shorter Grand Canyon trips from Las Vegas are to the West Rim, which is closer to Vegas (approx. 2.5 hours each way).

It isn’t quite as spectacular as the South Rim, because it’s at the west end of the canyon, which isn’t as wide or deep as it is in the middle, where the South Rim is located.  However, the shorter drive time makes for a shorter day and a lot less time in a bus.

There are two optional add-ons.

(1) The West Rim has the famous Skywalk – a horseshoe-shaped glass bridge jutting 70 feet out over the canyon. You walk out on it and look down and can see the canyon below your feet! This is an add-on option, and it’s cool to do but be aware that there are sometimes long wait times for the Skywalk as there are capacity limits and it’s popular.

(2) Some day trips from Las Vegas to Grand Canyon and Hoover Dam also include an optional helicopter ride over the canyon plus a 25-minute pontoon ride through a section of the canyon (for an additional fee). This is super fun and it’s great to see the canyon from multiple perspectives.

Because the West Rim is closer to Vegas, you also visit Hoover Dam on the way there or back.

💥💥💥 recommended 💥💥💥

My recommendation is to book the tour with lunch plus the helicopter ride and pontoon float. You see the canyon from the rim, from the air and from the water! And see Hoover Dam on the way back.

This tour is 11-12 hours and includes hotel pickup.  This means an early start – the first pickup is at 5:50am.  You have about 3.5 hours at the canyon, with a photo stop at the Hoover Dam Memorial Bridge on the way back.

Note that you can choose:

  1. the basic tour without any add-ons; or
  2. tour + lunch + Skywalk; or
  3. tour + lunch + helicopter & pontoon ride ***recommended***

Tour Length: 11-12 hours

➡️ Book the West Rim Grand Canyon tour

A day trip to the Grand Canyon’s West Rim is ideal if you want to see the Grand Canyon but want to spend less time travelling there.

South Rim

deep canyon at Grand Canyon South Rim

The other main option is the South Rim, which is (quite a bit) further from Las Vegas than the West Rim.  This means you spend a large chunk of your day (about 5 hours each way = 9-10 hours in total) getting there and back.  The added drive time makes for a very long day (15-17 hours).

The payoff is that this is the main section of the canyon, where it is deepest and widest.  These are those classic postcard views you’re thinking of when you think of the Grand Canyon. The views here really are incredible.

There are also plenty of facilities right there at Grand Canyon Village, including Hope House where you can buy native American handicrafts.

Unlike the West Rim, this is actually inside the national park, so these are technically the only day trips from Vegas to Grand Canyon National Park. (The West Rim IS the Grand Canyon but lies outside the national park on the Havasupai Indian Reservation.)

The biggest downside to the South Rim trips really is the travel time. You spend 9-10 hours in the coach getting there and back.

The tour includes a stop for breakfast and dinner in Boulder, with an option to have breakfast, lunch, or both meals included. It includes hotel pickup from most major Las Vegas hotels. Because it’s such a long day, hotel pickups are between 5:00 and 6:00am. You have about 3 hours at the canyon’s South Rim.

Tour Length: 15-17 hours

A day trip to the Grand Canyon’s South Rim is ideal if you want to see the most spectacular part of the Grand Canyon and are OK spending a large part of your day in the bus getting there and back.

➡️ Book the Grand Canyon South Rim tour

Helicopter from Las Vegas

canyon with river seen from helicopter

For something really special, and if you don’t want to spend time in a coach, I recommend splurging on a helicopter tour. They aren’t cheap, but you’ll save those hours on the road, making this a great option, too, if you don’t have the full day to spare that most day trips from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon take.

And seeing the canyon from above is beyond awe-inspiring. Plus, the pilot points out things of interest that you probably wouldn’t have noticed from the rim.

The tour includes flying over Lake Mead and Hoover Dam on the way to the Grand Canyon (and the Las Vegas strip on the way back).

The flight is over the West Rim and includes a landing inside the west end of the canyon, about 3,000 feet below the rim. There’s a champagne toast when you land inside the canyon, as well as snacks. The tour includes hotel pickup from most major Vegas hotels about 1.5 hours before the flight time.

Tour Length: Approx. 4 hours (1.5 hours in the air – 45 minutes each way)

A helicopter tour to the Grand Canyon is ideal if you want to see the canyon from the air and have less time, as this is a half-day trip.

➡️ Book a helicopter ride from Las Vegas

2. Death Valley National Park

yellowish creviced hard sand in Death Valley

Death Valley is a land of superlatives: the largest national park in the lower 48 states, the lowest place in the United States, the hottest place on the planet, and home to the rarest fish in the world.

Death Valley day trips from Las Vegas take about 2 hours to get there, but arriving in Death Valley feels like landing on another planet.

The thing that struck me when I first visited there was that there were so many different micro desert environments all in one compact area. There are golden badlands at Zabriskie Point, salt flats at Badwater Basin, sand dunes at Mesquite Flats, colored sands at Artist’s Palette, and even a crater!

So, you not only get bragging rights to say you’ve been here, but you’ll also get to see some truly amazing landscapes – and all in one day.

I don’t recommend Death Valley trips from Las Vegas in the summer months when temperatures can hit 120°F and it’s very uncomfortable and even dangerous to be outside in the daytime.

The tour includes hotel pickup from most major Las Vegas hotels and a boxed lunch. It starts at 8:00am. Day trips from Las Vegas to Death Valley give you about 6 hours in the national park. Stops include Dante’s View (for a bird’s eye view of the valley), Zabriskie Point, Artist’s Palette, Badwater Basin (where you can stand on the lowest point in North America at 282 feet below sea level), and Devil’s Golf Course (cool salt formations).

Tour Length: Trips to Death Valley from Las Vegas are typically about 10 hours

A day trip to Death Valley National Park is ideal if you want to see a variety of incredible desert landscapes and check off a few superlatives from your bucket list (and don’t want to start at 5:00am!)

➡️ Book a Death Valley Tour

3. Zion National Park

rocky hill with narrow river and some trees in Zion National Park

About 2.5 hours from Vegas, Zion is hands-down one of my favorite day trips. The national park is centered around a beautiful canyon, where you travel along the bottom of the canyon, rather than the rim.  It’s home to spectacular scenery and some of the most iconic hikes in the country.

Once you’re there, for most of the year the park runs a mandatory free shuttle system that stops at all the major trailheads.

The thing I really like about this tour is that it’s one of the few 1 day trips from Las Vegas that gives you plenty of time to hike.

There are two super famous hikes in Zion.  The Narrows is a hike through a narrow slot canyon IN a river.  Yes, you crisscross the river as you head upstream. It’s awesome. Day trips that only go to Zion give you enough time to do this hike.

The other iconic hike in Zion is Angels Landing.   You do need a permit to hike Angels Landing (not included in the tour – read all about the Angels Landing Permit Lottery here).  The permit is only needed for the last 0.5 miles (each way) of the trail, which is along a narrow ridge with drop offs on both sides plummeting thousands of feet below. There’s a chain to hold on to.  Definitely not for you if you’re afraid of heights, but if you’re not, it’s a thrill, for sure.

You’ll have time to hike either the Narrows or Angels Landing, but not both.

If you’re not up for intense hiking, there are easier options!  Riverside Walk is an easy 2-mile paved trail that follows the Virgin River. I’ve spotted mule deer and wild turkeys right from the path.

Check out my favorite Zion National Park hikes for more options. Your guide will also know a selection of hikes and will be know exactly when to hit each spot to avoid the busiest times.

💥💥💥 recommended 💥💥💥

This tour is only to Zion National Park.  Many day trips to Zion also include Bryce Canyon (see the next section). I’m not going to lie – this is a difficult choice to make.  Bryce Canyon is amazing, but I also really like having more time in Zion to explore the park on my own and to do one of the longer famous hikes.

This tour actually stops in Springdale (near the park’s entrance) on the way there to pick up rental gear (stick, waders, shoes) for the Narrows hike if you want to do that hike.

It takes about 2.5 hours to drive to Zion and you’ll have about 6 hours at the national park.

Tour Length:  11 – 13 hours (approximately)

➡️ Book a tour to Zion National Park

There’s also an option for a private tour. Obviously, this is more expensive, but if you prefer not having to wait for other people or if you’re traveling with a large enough group (up to 5 people), it can be a great option.

Tour Length:  9-10 hours (approximately)

Day trips from Las Vegas to Zion National Park are ideal if you want to spend a day doing an amazing hike and/ or enjoying spectacular scenery without spending 8-10 hours in a bus to get there and back.

4.  Bryce Canyon National Park

orange sandstone pillars in Bryce Canyon

The first time I saw Bryce Canyon’s amphitheater, I was literally lost for words.  Thousands of red rock spires called hoodoos stretch as far as you can see, crowded into a large bowl-like one-sided canyon. I’ve been to 83 countries and all 7 continents and have never seen anywhere like Bryce Canyon. It’s like something from a sci-fi movie! And photos do not prepare you for how amazing it is in real life.

Bryce Canyon is one of my favorite national parks, but there are a couple of downsides to Bryce Canyon trips from Las Vegas. Firstly, Bryce Canyon is further afield than Zion. It’s about four hours direct from Vegas, so you’ll spend more time travelling and the days are longer.

All Bryce Canyon National Park day trips from Las Vegas also include Zion National Park, since you basically have to drive through Zion to get to or from Bryce Canyon, which means you get less time in both parks than if you only visited one.

The plus side to that is that you get to see two incredible places in just one day – and you can always doze in the bus on the way back. And the day is broken up with several stops, so it doesn’t seem too long in the van or coach.

The tour includes hotel pickup on the Las Vegas Strip (and the Golden Nugget). It’s an early start – around 5:30am. You first get to Bryce Canyon around 11:00am, where you’ll have about 2-3 hours.  Then it’s on to Zion, about 1.5 hours away.  You have another 2 hours or so at Zion, before heading back to Vegas. You’ll see the highlights of both parks, but won’t have time for hiking.

Tour Length: Approx. 14 hours

A day trip to Zion and Bryce Canyon National Parks is ideal if you want to see two of the best national parks in the US in one day and don’t want to do much hiking.

➡️ Book a tour to Bryce Canyon and Zion National Parks

5. Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area

red rounded rock with shrubs at front in Red Rock Canyon

Red Rock Canyon lies inside the Mojave Desert and has spectacular red sandstone cliffs thousands of feet high.

Just 25 minutes from the Las Vegas Strip, Red Rock Canyon offers a quick escape into nature without eating up your whole day. Most Red Rock Canyon day trips from Las Vegas are half-day trips, with morning or afternoon options available.

There are three tour options, with a combination of the following 4 activities:

  1. A drive through the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, with a stop at the entrance sign
  2. The one-way 13-mile scenic drive through the canyon, which winds past towering red sandstone formations.  There are 4-5 stops, including the Visitor Center, where you may well spot wild burros.
  3. Spring Mountain Ranch State Park. An historic old west home where you can explore some of the oldest buildings in Nevada, including a 1860s blacksmith shop, the Sandstone Cabin that was home to the founding family, and the ranch house. The surrounding area has wild burros, huge beautiful trees, grassy pastures, lakes and springs.
  4. The old mining town of Blue Diamond. An old west mining town that was built for workers of the Blue Diamond Mine in the 1800’s. It’s a cute town with an historic home on the Old Spanish Pioneer Trail, a general store, church, and more wild burros frequently walking through the town! The tour stops for a snack at a cute restaurant.

There are three tour options:

  1. Red Rock Canyon Scenic Loop Tour (4 hours): Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area only. Drive the 13-mile scenic drive with several photo stops. This does not include Spring Mountain Ranch or Blue Diamond.
  1. Award-Winning Red Rock Canyon Tour (4 hours): Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area sign + Spring Mountain Ranch State Park + Blue Diamond. This does NOT include the scenic loop drive.
  1. The Ultimate Red Rock Canyon Scenic Experience Tour (6 hours): Panoramic Scenic Loop Drive (with photo stops) + Spring Mountain Ranch State Park + Blue Diamond.

I’d definitely choose an option with the scenic drive (either Option 1 or 3) – the desert views are incredible.

Pickup is from Treasure Island, Bellagio, and Excalibur. Morning and afternoon tours are available.  I’d personally just go with the Scenic Loop Tour, but if you want a dose of history and some cute buildings, then choose the Ultimate tour.

Tour Length: 4 – 6 hours (depending on the option you choose)

A half-day trip to Red Rock Canyon is ideal if you want a half day tour to somewhere very close to Vegas with beautiful desert scenery. (And options 2 and 3 if you’re interested in history and cute architecture).

➡️ Book a Red Rock Canyon tour

Trips to Red Rock Canyon from Las Vegas can also be combined with the Valley of Fire.

6. Valley of Fire State Park

striped red rock in Valley of Fire

An hour from the glitz of Vegas, Valley of Fire feels like stepping onto Mars with its bright red sandstone formations. The name suits the place really well – it’s some of the most striking places I’ve seen.

Some of the highlights include the Beehive Rock formations – mounds of rocks that have been molded by the water and wind and are pockmarked with holes, so they look like beehives.  Then there’s Atlatl Rock, which has truly incredible petroglyphs.

There’s also an amazing out-and-back scenic drive, including a short side road to Fire Canyon Overlook.  And at the far end of the park, a short hike takes you to Elephant Rock, a large rock that – with a bit of imagination – looks like an elephant.

💥💥💥 recommended 💥💥💥

You have about 5 hours in the Valley of Fire, which is a good amount of time, as the state park is not super big.

Tour Length:  Approx. 7 hours

A day tour to Valley of Fire State Park is ideal if you want to see stunning desert landscape a short ride from Las Vegas and don’t want a crazy long day with hours in a coach or van.

➡️ Book a Valley of Fire Tour

Valley of Fire day trips from Las Vegas can also be combined with Red Rock Canyon (approx. 8 hours).

Hiking Tour to Valley of Fire

If you like hiking, there’s also a tour that includes a guided hike.

There are three different options:

🥾 East Hike: For casual hikers. 4-hours including hotel transport.
🥾 Moderate Hike: A decent level of fitness required. 4.5- to 5-hours including hotel transport.
🥾 Difficult Hike:  Recommended for avid hikers. 5.5- to 6-hours including hotel transport.

Depending upon which option you choose, the hiking tour leaves Las Vegas at sunrise, or in the late morning / early afternoon.

Many of the hiking trails are closed mid-May to the end of September due to the danger that the extreme heat poses. The heat also means that the afternoon option isn’t available in the summer months.

I only really recommend doing the hiking tour if you’re there in the cooler months because it’s still really hot in the morning and the options are more limited in the hotter months.

Pickup is offered for most major hotels in Las Vegas.

Tour Length: 4-6 hours, depending on hike difficulty

A hiking trip to Valley of Fire State Park is ideal if you visit in the cooler months, like to hike, and are looking for a shorter trip at a place closer to Las Vegas than Zion National Park.

7.  Hoover Dam (Lake Mead National Recreation Area)

dam with blue water at top with dry hills on side

Lake Mead day trips from Vegas typically focus on Hoover Dam. Just 30 minutes from the Strip, this is an easy half-day trip.

The tour includes a powerplant tour inside the dam down into the walls of the Black Canyon where the massive turbines and Art Deco architecture will blow you away. There’s also a 45-minute guided “Walk on the Top” tour, plus time at the Visitor Center where there are interesting exhibits about how they built the dam. And, of course, stunning views of the dam from the memorial bridge.

Not all Hoover Dam day trips from Las Vegas do, but this tour also includes a photo stop at the famous Welcome to Las Vegas Sign on the way.

The deluxe tour is about 5.5 hours and includes a hot lunch. Pickup is in the morning (typically 8:00am) from several of the major Las Vegas Strip hotels (and the Golden Nugget). One of the nice things about the bus trips to Hoover Dam from Las Vegas is that you don’t have a crazy early start and they’re over by mid-afternoon, so it’s a fun day out without being too full-on.

Tour Length: 5.5 hours (approx.)

Day trips from Las Vegas to Hoover Dam are ideal if you want see this iconic structure while you’re in Las Vegas.

➡️ Book a Hoover Dam tour

 8. Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend Day Trip from Las Vegas

swirls fo colored sandstone in a narrow slot canyon at Antelope canyon

Lower Antelope Canyon is one of the most amazing places you’ll ever see. This is a narrow slot canyon with incredible orange and purple sandstone that swirls all around you.  It’s amazing.

There are actually two sections to Antelope Canyon – this tour goes to the Lower Canyon, which offers a more active experience with stairs and ladders. It’s a little less crowded than Upper Canyon, and the swirling patterns in the rock walls really are unbelievable.

However, it’s most definitely not a solitary experience.  You go in a small group with a Navajo guide (required) and there’s usually another group right in front of you and another right behind you.

A nice thing is that the guide points out the best places for photos and will even help you adjust your camera or phone onto the correct setting to best highlight the colors. It’s more a photo opp. than a nature experience.

Day trips from Las Vegas to Antelope Canyon also include Horseshoe Bend, another iconic photo spot. A fairly easy 1.5-mile round trip walk takes you to a viewpoint overlooking the Colorado River as it makes a perfect U-turn 1,000 feet below.

horseshoe shaped river with steep rock in middle at Horseshoe Bend

The hike from the parking lot is mostly on soft sand, which can be a lot in the summer heat, but it also feels good to stretch after a long ride to get there.

You pass by Lake Powell, the second-largest man-made lake in the United States, on the way back.

A 1 day Antelope Canyon tour from Las Vegas (plus Horseshoe Bend) is a very long day with a lot of time in the coach.  It takes about 6 hours to drive from Las Vegas plus there’s another 40 minutes or so doing the hotel pickups and drop-offs depending on your hotel.

Fortunately, the coach is comfortable, the guides give plenty of interesting information along the way, and there are snacks and drinks, which helps make the long ride bearable.

There is hotel pickup from most major hotels.  This can be as early as 4:40am depending on the hotel and time of year.

All in all, you have about 3 hours there and the rest of the time is getting there and back.

Tour Length: The Horsehoe bend and Antelope Canyon day trip from Las Vegas is about 14-16 hours

Horseshoe Bend and Antelope Canyon day tours from Las Vegas are ideal if you are OK spending a long day in a coach and want to see two of the most iconic photo spots in the United States.

➡️ Book a tour to Horseshoe Bend and Antelope Canyon

9. Mount Charleston

rocky hill with forest at bottom at Mount Charleston

Less than an hour from the Strip, Mount Charleston hits you with a 20-degree temperature drop and the scent of pine trees. This is a great place to head in summer when Vegas is broiling – the mountain stays a good 20-30 degrees cooler than the city.

The area is filled with pine, juniper, scrub oak and manzanita, and even thousand-year-old bristlecone pines at the higher elevations. It’s very different from the hot desert landscape that you’ll see on most of the other bus trips from Las Vegas.

At 7,717 feet, the Mt. Charleston Lodge makes a perfect lunch stop with stunning views of the mountain peaks in Kyle Canyon’s Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest.

Note that although you have time for lunch, lunch is not included in the tour price.

If you go here is winter, expect snow (and dress accordingly)!

This is not my top pick – compared to most of the other places you can go on day trips from Vegas, this is a bit more ho hum. But it is nice to be cooler up in the mountains and either escape the summer heat or see snow.  And the scenery is nice.  And the tour isn’t too long and it’s not very far to travel.

Tour Length: Approx. 5 hours

A day trip to Mount Charleston is ideal if you want a half-day trip somewhere cool (literally).

➡️ Book a tour to Mount Charleston

10. Emerald Cave (Lake Mead National Recreation Area)

front of kayak in green water and rock cliffs at Emerald Cave

Emerald Cave is a (surprisingly small) cave in Black Canyon that has incredible emerald green water. (Though it only looks the crazy bright green you can see in photos when the sun is shining right in it).

To get there, a guided kayak tour includes paddling 4-6 miles on the Colorado River through Black Canyon, which is about 900 feet deep.

I personally think the cave itself is a little underwhelming, but the kayak trip through the canyon is absolutely worth it. The kayaking is easy, because there is little to no current.

The tour includes a catered lunch on a remote beach.

Pickup is available at 3 hotels on the Las Vegas Strip. The tour includes 2-3 hours of driving (1-1.5 hours each way) and 4-4.5 hours at the river.

Tour Length: 67.5 hours (approx.)

A day trip to Emerald Cave is ideal if you want to get out on the water and enjoy some nice scenery not too far from Vegas.

➡️ Book a kayak tour to Emerald Cave

You can also do this as a private tour, which gives you more flexibility (and of course they can pick you up from any hotel in Las Vegas).

Final Thoughts on Vegas Day Trips

From nearby Red Rock Canyon to more distant Antelope Canyon, these 10 day trips out of Las Vegas prove there’s way more to a Vegas vacation than casinos and shows.
