Grand Canyon National Park in July: What to Expect

Planning a trip to Grand Canyon National Park in July can feel a little overwhelming.

Will it be dangerously hot? Can you hike below the rim safely? Are the crowds unbearable? And is this even a good time to go?

If youโ€™re asking those questions, youโ€™re in the right place โ€” Iโ€™m going to help you figure out exactly what to expect so you can plan smart and avoid the biggest mistakes.

Iโ€™ve spent time at the Grand Canyon in peak summer and learned quickly that July here isnโ€™t one-size-fits-all. The rim can feel comfortable (at least early in the morning)โ€ฆ while just a short hike down can be 20+ degrees hotter.

This guide is for you if youโ€™re planning a summer visit, traveling with family, or trying to experience the canyon safely without missing the highlights.

Youโ€™ll learn what the weather is really like at different elevations, how crowded it gets, what you can realistically do, and how to plan your days. Quick tip: the best way to experience the canyon in July isnโ€™t hiking at noon โ€” itโ€™s catching sunrise on the rim, then doing any hiking early before the heat builds.

Iโ€™ll keep this real, practical, and based on experience.

Letโ€™s get you ready for the Grand Canyon in July.

Visiting the Grand Canyon in July

Rock mountains surrounded by tree bushes under the sun in Grand Canyon National Park

Taking a trip to the Grand Canyon in July offers unique opportunities and concerns as the warm weather, monsoon season, and numerous outdoor activities shape your experience.

Weather in the Grand Canyon in July

Weather varies greatly depending on elevation.

Temperatures vary a lot depending on where you are.

๐ŸŒก๏ธ South Rim average temperatures range from 80โ€“90ยฐF daytime highs (but some days get into the 100s!) with nighttime lows around 50โ€“60ยฐF. Morning and evening temperatures are often pleasant.
๐ŸŒก๏ธ Inner canyon has average highs 100โ€“110ยฐF. This is an average – days can often be even hotter! and the rocks radiate additional heat. Because of these extreme conditions, hiking to the canyon floor during midday is strongly discouraged.
๐ŸŒก๏ธ North Rim is cooler (and less crowded), with daily average highs of 70โ€“80ยฐF.

Whatโ€™s Open in Grand Canyon National Park in July?

July is peak season at Grand Canyon National Park, and both the South Rim and North Rim are fully open and operating on summer schedules.

Hereโ€™s what you can expect:

South Rim

July is one of the busiest months on the South Rim, and all major facilities and services are open.

This includes Desert View Drive and the Desert View Watchtower, Hermit Road (which is only accessible by shuttle in summer), the Grand Canyon Village area, and the Yavapai Point & Geology Museum.

The shuttle system is fully operational, including the village shuttle, the shuttle to and from Tusayan, the Kaibab/rim route shuttle, and the Hermit Road Shuttle (which is required โ€” private vehicles are restricted in July). Shuttles run frequently but can be crowded midday.

All Visitor Centers (Grand Canyon Visitor Center, Yavapai Geology Museum, and Verkampโ€™s Visitor Center) are open and operating on a full summer schedule.

North Rim

The North Rim is open midโ€‘May through midโ€‘October, including all of July. Note that a large fire destroyed Grand Canyon Lodge at the North Rim in 2025. The scenic drive and North Kaibab Trail are open.

โžก๏ธ Get help planning: North Rim Itinerary

The North Rim is cooler, higher elevation, and significantly less crowded than the South Rim.

Inner Canyon

Phantom Ranch, which has cabins and hiker dorms, is open. Advance reservations are required – you need to enter a lottery 15 months in advance. See my Guide to Phantom Ranch Reservations for more details.

Backcountry camping is allowed with permit.

Water stations typically operational (check current status before hiking)

Keep in mind, though, that there is extreme heat in July โ€” conditions often exceed 110ยฐF at the bottom.

Places to Stay

All lodging & campgrounds are open in July, but it gets busy – reservations are strongly recommended months in advance.

There is only one lodge at the bottom of the canyon, Phantom Ranch. โžก๏ธ Read my guide to Phantom Ranch Reservations for more details.

โžก๏ธ For the South Rim, my guide to the best hotels in Grand Canyon Village and my guide to the best hotels near the South Rim (outside the park).

The main gateway town to the South Rim is Tusayan.

โžก๏ธ Find a hotel in Tusayan on Expedia.
โžก๏ธ Find a vacation rental in or near Tusayan on VRBO.

On the North Rim, the only lodge inside the national park, the Grand Canyon Lodge, burned to the ground in a terrible fire in 2025. The nearest lodge is Kaibab Lodge. There is a campground on the North Rim. Check recreation.gov for availability and to book.

Things To Do in July in Grand Canyon National Park

The Grand Canyon’s wildlife becomes active in July due to the warm weather. Keep an eye out for various bird species like the peregrine falcon and California condor, as well as elk, mule deer, and bighorn sheep.

July is also a good month for a whitewater rafting excursion along the Colorado River, when you’ll enjoy the cold water.

In July, the National Park Service provides ranger-led programs comprising various activities, such as guided hikes, wildlife spotting sessions, and informative talks on the canyon’s geology and cultural history.

The monsoon season often presents beautiful skies with towering thunderheads and stunning sunsets in July, offering great photo opportunities and breathtaking views of the canyon.

Despite the occasional cloud cover, July offers clear skies for stargazing.

You might also catch a glimpse of late-blooming wildflowers, such as desert sunflowers and blackfoot daisies, adding vibrant hues to the canyonโ€™s arid surroundings.

Hiking Trails

All trails are open, including the Bright Angel Trail and the South Kaibab Trail but it gets dangerously hot below the rim. So, although partial day hikes below the rim are possible, heat caution is required. I’ve seen people really suffering from the heat not far below the rim – always take plenty of water and salty snacks. Hike early or late. Remember – going down is optional – going up is not!

Is July a Good Time to Visit Grand Canyon National Park?

July can be a great time to visit if you plan to stay mostly on the rim, start outdoor activities early, avoid long descents into the canyon, and book lodging well in advance.

Itโ€™s less ideal for strenuous belowโ€‘theโ€‘rim hiking due to extreme heat.

With smart timing and realistic expectations, Grand Canyon National Park in July offers stunning views, full access to both rims, and unforgettable summer sunsets โ€” just respect the desert heat.

Pros

  • Active wildlife for spotting various species
  • Excellent time for whitewater rafting adventures
  • A variety of ranger-led programs are available
  • Dramatic skies and striking sunsets for unique photo opportunities
  • Clear skies for stargazing
  • Late-blooming wildflowers add vibrant colors to the landscape

Cons

  • Scorching temperatures can potentially lead to heat-related issues
  • Sudden rainstorms, thunderstorms, and flash floods due to monsoon season
  • Crowded trails and viewpoints due to the popularity of July visits (particularly around Independence Day)

Key Events in July

Flagstaff Art in the Park

A locally owned festival featuring unique fine art and crafts by over 70 artists from the Southwest. It takes place on the Fourth of July and Labor Day weekends in Downtown Flagstaff’s Wheeler Park, with live music, food, and a Shady Beer Garden.
