The Closest Airport to Mesa Verde National Park

Are you planning your trip to southwest Colorado’s Mesa Verde National Park?  It’s a unique park with incredible, well-preserved Pueblo cliff dwellings, ancient structures, pit houses and petroglyphs.

As you start your planning, you may well be wondering: Can you fly to Mesa Verde National Park? The answer is yes, you can, but you will then need to drive (or take a day tour) to get into the national park.  The park has only one entrance, and from there it’s a narrow, winding drive up to the top of the mesa.

There are several small towns nearby, including Cortez, Mancos and Durango.  Major cities (and airports) are much further afield, however.  Which can make it tricky to decide where to fly into.

This guide is here to help you plan out your travel itinerary.  Depending on the details of your trip, the nearest airport to Mesa Verde National Park may not be the best.  But, let’s find out..

Planning Your Trip to Mesa Verde National Park

Here are the basic steps to follow when planning your Mesa Verde trip:

  1. First up, you’ll need to decide when to go.
  1. You’ll also need to decide how long to go for
  1. Then, you’ll need to decide where to stay.  There is a campground inside the national park at the bottom of the mesa, and a lodge at the top of the mesa.  Other options exist in nearby towns, but involve longer travel times to the park’s attractions.
  1. Now that you have decided where to stay, the next thing is to decide the best way to get to Mesa Verde.  If you’re taking a road trip, you’ll need to rent a car and plan out your route. Book a car through Discover Cars – you enter your destination and they scan all of the available cars in all the agencies to find the best price for the type of car you want.   You can also read my Guide to Finding the Cheapest Rental Car for handy tips.  Check my Road Trip Packing List to make sure you have everything you need for your trip.
  1. If you’re going to fly, read on to find an airport close to Mesa Verde National Park.  That’s what this guide is to help you do!
  1. Then you’ll need to book a flight.  I recommend using Skyscanner to search through all available flights to find the cheapest.
  1. Finally, you will need to decide your itinerary.

How to Decide The Best Airport Near Mesa Verde National Park

If you’re deciding on the best option for airports near Mesa Verde National Park, you need to check on a few things on your trip.

  • Where else are you planning to go on your trip? Are you planning to see other attractions and national parks near Mesa Verde? Arches National Park is just three hours away, Monument Valley is 2.5 hours, and the Aztec Ruins National Monument is just an hour and a half away.
  • When are you going? Will you be traveling in the warmer months of May to September? This is when the park is fully open and more flight options are available.
  • Where are you staying? Choosing the airport close to your accommodation makes the most sense if you have limited time for travel.
  • How much time do you have? Are you taking a short trip or planning to stay longer? It’s better to choose an accessible airport if you want to save on travel time.
  • What’s your budget? Are you looking for budget flights? Are there car rentals that can give you the best deals? Flights and car rental rates vary depending on what airport you’ll fly into.
  • Do you have a frequent flyer program with a specific airline? Choosing larger airports can give you more options for flights and airline services.
  • Where are you flying from? Are you taking a domestic or international flight? Some airports offer more choices for connecting flights to several US cities and outside the country.
  • What type of car do you want to rent when you arrive? Getting a car rental is the best way to get around the park. So it’s best to check available rental cars since it varies with several airports.
