June is one of the most versatile months for visiting U.S. national parks. Across much of the country, roads and trails are reopening, waterfalls are still flowing strongly, wildflowers are blooming, and wildlife is active.
At the same time, June often feels calmer than July and August, especially if you visit earlier in the month.
High-elevation parks finally become accessible, coastal parks enjoy long daylight hours and mild temperatures, and forested parks are lush and green. While June marks the beginning of peak season in some places, it also offers maximum access with fewer trade-offs than later in summer.
Here are 10 of the best national parks to visit in June in the US โ with why June is an ideal month for each, considering weather, access, seasonal attractions, crowd patterns, and whatโs open.

The 10 Best National Parks in June
1. Yellowstone National Park (WY/MT/ID)

Yellowstone is the worldโs first national park and one of its most diverse, with geysers, hot springs, waterfalls, forests, and wide-open valleys filled with wildlife.
June is one of the best months for wildlife viewing. Bison calves, elk calves, and other newborn animals are common sights, and predators are often active in the early summer.
Most roads and visitor services are open by June, but crowds are still lighter than in July and August. Cooler temperatures also make walking the geyser basins far more comfortable than later in summer.

2. Grand Teton National Park (WY)

Grand Teton National Park is known for its dramatic, jagged mountain skyline rising abruptly from valley floors, along with pristine lakes and abundant wildlife.
June brings wildflowers to the valley floor, while higher elevations remain dusted with snow, creating striking contrast. Hiking, kayaking, and scenic drives are all excellent this time of year.
Wildlife such as moose, bears, and elk are frequently seen in June, and the park feels alive without the congestion of peak summer.

June offers comfortable summer weather without the peak-season crowds of July and August. Days are long, making it easy to hike, bike, and explore the shoreline.
Wildflowers bloom, the ocean air is refreshing, and sunrise atop Cadillac Mountain is less competitive than later in summer. June strikes an ideal balance between access and atmosphere.

In June, lower- and mid-elevation trails are open, while snow still clings to the highest peaks. This creates dramatic scenery and excellent hiking conditions before summer crowds arrive.
Wildflowers begin appearing in meadows, and wildlife such as elk and bighorn sheep are active throughout the park. Itโs a quieter introduction to RMNP before full summer access.
